It sounds like you might be bipolar. If you told a psychiatrist this he would probably assume that's what you have. I know someone who has his bipolar disorder completely controlled with a daily pill (not sure what it is) for the past 9 years so I know it is possible to get help for this problem.

Agreed. This could be neurological in origin rather than a psychological issue, and require medical intervention rather than counseling. A neuropsychological evaluation and/or brain scan imaging may be in order here.

Reject any referrals or suggestions about undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The developers and most prominent proponents of CBT are honestly candid about the limits of this treatment modality. With bipolar, you may need lithium, as talk therapies like CBT are as useless for treating bipolar as they are useless for curing cancer. (In fact, suggesting talk therapy for neurological conditions is criminal malpractice.)

CBT makes a lot of money for psychologists because it's so worthless in treating brain based biological conditions like bipolar or AD/HD (which I have).

Insist on making this a medical issue, and Big Pharma can sometimes be your friend.

He was talking about his bipolar disorder last night actually. He said his psychiatrist asked him if he ever feels over the top happy or excited, way above normal and he said sometimes if he is in a big store like Walmart he yells he gets so excited. He has a few days with non stop energy and excitement, then crashes and feel absolutely awful and depressed. He said his mother has bipolar disorder. It does run in families.

He is very creative and somewhat famous. He makes movies. He is fortunate to have found a drug he can take that controls his extreme mood swings but also lets him be creative.

I had to go through over half a dozen different sleep specialists before I finally found a couple of competent ones for treating my severe congenital obstructive sleep apnea.

Nurses are rightly called "The noblest profession," whereas medical doctors are denigrated as "quacks" and "charlatans" for too many excellent reasons to count.

Do NOT tolerate dismissals. Medical doctors work for YOU, and professionals are people who do the jobs they are paid to do. If they dismiss you, then you have an obligation to yourself to dismiss them by immediately FIRING them!

Medical doctors are required to have strong stomachs and be good students at doing what they are told by their professors, but that does not mean they have superior intelligence. (In fact, many medical doctors and dentists are quite stupid.)

You have been dealing with morons. Keep looking until you find somebody who is not a complete pompous idiot, but a care provider who actually respects you, listens to what you say, and refers you for appropriate tests and treatments.

It's not all bad if you are manic. You can even take advantage of it...:

I also get intense mood swings. I can be content with my decision to CTB. I could be happily researching methods and setting intentions and then suddenly get so angry, impulsive, and nearly animalistic. I'm pursuing a professional diagnosis soon and hope you consider it too. I'm hoping it'll make life easier, whether that entails the staying alive part or getting to plan an ideal, maybe even peaceful, demise with a clear head. Either way, I'm looking forward to better understanding. I want to feel like myself whenever I go.

I get the same thing myself. I can carry on, work, talk to people, etc. Then next moment i'm being reclusive and hiding in my house finishing my CTB note. Suicide lurks in my mind always and it seems like Im only phasing between depression and a neutral emotion. The comments could be correct with the bipolar thing I would definitely have a therapist check it out before you self diagnose though. My father was Bipolar and I very well could have it myself I just haven't done anything about it.

I agree with what others have stated regarding bipolar. But I wanted to add that it could also have something to do with sleep hygene, hormones, and/or diet.

I have had Bipolar for over 25 years and it sounds like you may have it as well. There are lots of great books that you should read, they opened my eyes. I'm on lithium, an antipsychotic, and an antidepressant. My view is you need to write down all of the swings that you are having even if it's every hour and bring it to the doctor, you may need to exaggerate how big the swings are. Bipolar needs to be treated with meds. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck.

"it's" not meant to... you are, if you don't commit to it as a behavioral change then of course it won;t do anything as it isn't a pill.

interesting people are pulling on the BiPolar side, I am very very similar with my mood swings, and how I am very high one min, then can hit rock bottom. I have been told by specialists it can only be BPD and nothing else.

Get checked for rapid-cycling. A term they used for mood swings that can change in a course of a day, even an hour. There's a dozen mental disorders that carry that symptom. They may be able to tie it with something else that you may have experienced to give you a general diagnosis. If they label you as Borderline, I would seek a second opinion.

In the states, there are a minimum number of features needed to be met, as defined within the DSM-5, before one is formally diagnosed with any mental illness. Being "moody", in an of itself, is insufficient to meet the thresholds spelled out within the DSM. However, the DSM is only a guide, and psychiatrists can use discretion in its application.

As mentioned above, it could be something other than mental illness. A good place to start would be to have your physician conduct a full panel of lab work, including a thyroid panel.

I would also recommend trying an elimination diet to uncover any food intolerances and sensitivities. A common first step would be to go gluten and dairy free, and to get off all processed foods and food chemicals.

Personally, I have thyroid issues and other hormonal issues, including cortisol dysregulation, etc., which contribute to my moodiness. And, for whatever it's worth, I have bipolar, which frankly, I'm not fully convinced isn't just an extreme reaction to caffeine, as I've never been manic without caffeine in my system, and I've been a major abuser of caffeine for the majority of my life. No doubt the caffeine has altered significantly the adenosine receptors within my brain.

You can access the DSM on line to read the features and thresholds required for bipolar disorder and all other forms of mental illness. Having better familiarity with the diagnostic criteria can help cut to the chase, if in fact you ultimately do seek a psychiatric evaluation.
