My prior service was 60 years ago. I am just glad they don't spit on military any more.
In addition to military suicide you find a higher rate among cops and nurses. I suspect one reason is that changing environments exposes one to some harsh environments and some find it more difficult to cope. In addition up until a little over 100 years ago most people grew up, lived, and died where they were born. They had large families and their social environment was their siblings and cousins.
Today even people who are nit subject to changing environments can be isolated and disconnected because of the desert-like family environment.. The key to a military career is to find a MOS (military occupational specialty) you like and be able to connect with all sorts of people. Thus is made a little easier as you are often surrounded with people who are also in a strange (to them) environment.
Most military bases have a library, recreational facilities, and even sponsored activities like social outings, lectures, and religious services.
For some, the structure can be welcome and for others it can chafe. Only you can decide what is right for you.
