Starting this in consideration that with some of the failures seen by fellow members, the cause of failure was being caught, hospitalised and then even worse, transferred to a psychiatric unit.

So there are some difficulties that come for a number of people so it would be good to share thoughts and ideas on the subject as it is an essential part of any CBT plan.

Some of the difficulties members may have (this list is not exhausted and members are free to add other constraints) are:

1. Shortage of money
2. Physical disability
3. Mental Health issue (may prevent leaving home or anxiety to be anywhere else but the safety of the home).
4. Strict supervision (on a form of official or unofficial suicide watch)

Tried to generalise on the reasons rather than specific examples otherwise the list could go on for pages.

I will obviously omit any scenario where if you live with people and you find yourself in a position that you can have 8 hours overnight without interruption. The method you choose should factor in things like potential noise or whether the people you live with are deep sleepers. Having music on in the background can camouflage certain noise. For those worried about vomiting in their method may want to change their taste in music to something like heavy metal or something along those lines that a retching noise is easily covered. Playing Bach or Enya won't do the trick.

Not doing it at home options

Hotel. With a do not disturb sign on the door, you will have at minimum 16 hours of uninterrupted time as long as you put the 'do not disturb' sign up

Cons: Costs money.

Pros: Guaranteed privacy. Not being found by loved ones

My personal con is that you may also traumatise a housekeeping person. I would put a big note on the floor inside your room telling the housekeeper to not go further into the room any further and call the police.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Vehicle: Only viable for those ingesting a substance or in-taking a form of narcotic overdose or Exit Bag/gas method

Cons: None that I can see. If borrowing one from someone though they will get rid of it as they certainly would not want to drive around in it anymore. Depending where you park maybe a long time before you are found. If doing it at night, try and think of a place that has some form of passing traffic so a better chance of being found during the day. Doing it it the middle of the woods could mean you are missing for a long time and causes anxiety for those who know you are missing and looking for you. I considered a motorway/highway service station to be a good place as it is not uncommon to see people taking a nap in the car park on long drives.

Pros: Petrol/gas money only. Pick the right spot and you will be uninterrupted for a few good hours. Rent a car with GPS tracking and the car hire company will find you quicker so you can go off the beaten track a bit. Won't be found by a family member or friend.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Woodland/park: Secluded enough, a lot of privacy

Cons: Being found by someone and traumatising them, especially children. Go way off the beaten path and you may not be found giving an ongoing anxiety for those that will miss you. The only way I can think of mitigating that is to choose your spot in advance and inform people via delayed email or some other method where your body can be found.

Pros: zero money unless you need to pay for some form of transportation to get there.

Easiest time is obviously when people are not around or asleep. Start to make mental notes of these times and establish what your windows of opportunities are.

If the only time you have is during the night when people are asleep, start a habit that creates a noise. Go to the bathroom in the middle of the night every night (set an alarm). People may come out to see what is going on initially, after doing this for a while they may see it as a habit and stop coming out to check on you. Therefore you get them used to a bit of noise in the middle of the night. Maybe claim insomnia and play music or watch something on a laptop that creates a disturbance. The point is to get them to being comfortable with some noise as a habit. They will soon stop checking.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So that's my opening thoughts. I rarely see people talking about how they plan not to be interrupted but enough failure stories from members where they are. It's an absolute key part of your plan. For some there is no problem, for others its a real consideration and have to deal with certain constraints as part of their plan.

Feel free to add your own helpful tips or solutions.

That is exactly my problem, I have people in the house and cannot leave to an hotel or go for a drive at night without raising questions

^Same, I have to do it at home, and will probably do so in the middle of the night. This idea of creating noise as a habit is really interesting. I think I might try that leading up to my attempt. Thanks for this thread, Stan!

The purpose is to create a habit that conditions people to noise. Everyone is going to react to 'the bump in the night' because it is unusual. It's a bit like when I had my first child and the baby cried, initially i used to wake up in a bit of a panic because it was a surprise. Afterwards I just woke up and if it was her mother's turn to do nappy/diaper duty that night, I would just roll over. It is interesting that people will get used to it.

Music may create tension and mean you are up/available. Maybe white noise/fan? And yes, going to the bathroom as a habit. Pretend to wretch a bit, maybe? So they don't run in every time you throw up?

That is one idea, but if you plan on doing something that could lead to vomiting, I'd suggest just taking antiemetics.

Look, I know you mean well but really? A novel idea! AE does not guarantee you won't throw up, especially if you have health problems like a member here who is planning to go soon. This thread is for minimalising noise if it happens, every single body on this forum knows to take AE with any OD/poison.

I considered that and dismissed it fairly quickly. The objective is to create a normal noise habit. Has to be annoying for them to wake up and see what is going on, but not be worried by the reason. So if you wake them up with retching, you will create a new concern for those watching, which eventually could escalate into something else. Has to be innocent, like going to the bathroom or going to the kitchen for a drink. The aim is to wake them up and eventually that they have enough trust that it is innocent/normal and don't get out of bed to check. When they stop getting out of bed to check, you know you have reached your goal.

I suppose what worries me is people's ability to get used to a particular kind of noise but still react to another. If nobody suspects your intentions, a few days of 'stomach bug' might make them ignore it when it is real. Biased here, of course, I know that any sickness noise I make creates panic for a short while and then becomes completely uninteresting where I am.

Still, what do I know.

Ok, damn. Sorry for the suggestion. Not everyone might know to take AE.

It's a good point and I guess my response is situational at best as it is each individual who knows what is best in their household. My concern and possible escalation comes from if people already know that you are suffering MH issues, then a new behaviour of retching could be construed as an escalation into a sign of an eating disorder. my emphasis is not to add concern, but to remove it. But as i said before, it's down to the individual to assess what they can get away with. I think the high level principle stands though.

How to get discharged fast from psych ward:

Dress daily in the morning a d make sure you shower regularly and keep up with personal hygiene- the nurses see this as a positive sign of recovery and improving mental health, you taking care of yourself

- make sure you eat and drink regularly as again they will use your appetite and sleep to assess mood and improvement or worsening - "risk of self neglect" is something they constantly assess

- don't stay silent in your ward round, engage in conversation about your treatment, such as agreeing to take meds and if you don't agree to take ends explain why- like how you prefer holistic approach or would rather try therapy

- socialise with other patients- if staff see you joking, singing, laughing, smiling etc then they will likely (after seeing it daily for at least a week) start to believe maybe your mood has improved

- keep eye contact with staff when they ask you how you are

-don't abscond or over stay your given leave- don't even try running away , they will find you and section you.. Just come back on time

Anymore?

Give perfect answers during evaluation time with the doctor. Give them what they want and one shall be free!

I considered using my car. I wanted to find a spot that where a lone car in the middle of the night wouldn't look suspicious. If I was the only car in a parking lot, then that could raise suspicion. I'd prefer to scope out an area during the time to make sure it works. There wouldn't be too much good in choosing a spot that gets noticed. I'd want to find someplace where I could hide within plain sight.

24 hour diners
Hotel parking lots
Movie theaters
Bars
Commuter parking lots
Parking garages

The above did cross my mind. Whether or not they are useful to me would require recon.
