Hi everyone. Since I am already considering CTB I really don't have anything to lose. I currently live in Brazil but I am considering moving to US since my girlfriend lives in Miami. What are the chances of being financially successful in US comparing to Brazil according to your opinion guys? Any point of view would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes to everyone!

@coffee You're bilingual, so that's a big plus. Miami is a big city with lots of opportunities.

You would have to define "financial success." What does that mean to you. Being realistic, Miami is very expensive to live in. You would need to make at least $30/hour or $60k/year to not struggle. Think about expenses
Rent, car, food, clothes, phone, internet, entertainment, etc. It all adds up really quick. You'd be amazed at how fast $5k/month gets eaten up.

You chances depends on your skills. Programming, statistics, cyber security, banking, law, medicine. You're good to go on all of those.

Let's us know what exactly you're bringing to the table, and we can help you out.

Oh boi ... How I wish I could go to US too.

US, UK, Canada.
I was even considering Portugal.

Brazil is going to be hell next year. More than it's already is.

We should get out of here asap.
Totally agree man. It's going to be tough.

Thank you for your answering it. I'm an attorney in Brazil but I know that it won't be easy to practice law in US. By financial success I really just mean making a decent amount that allow me to live comfortably. Have already visited US a few times and totally agree that you need to make around $60k/year to not struggle.

Don't you need a green card to stay and work there?

You could easily get hired as a legal consultant for a bank or financial institution and make well over $100k/year. I would say start working on whatever you need to immigrate here and be able to work. Pm me if there is any info I might be able to help you with.

To get "easily" hired as a legal consultant for a bank or financial institution you need to be connected. It also depends on your area of practice. I've read that OP works in real estate which is largely not an exportable competency. It's possible to make good money if you get hired by an international company with business in Brazil or a fund that invests in Brazil or any other position that will make you apply Brazilian law. Opportunities are limited but so is the recruitment pool. Going to a foreign country and competing for local-law positions with locally schooled lawyers is a really poor strategy even if you have a star resume.

Sorry, I meant legal council as people who have a JD, but didn't take or pass the bar. For example, in correspondent banking, they are always looking for these specific qualifications. It would cost too much to hire a lawyer, but someone with a legal degree can be had for about 50-70% the cost.

Even if foreign-trained, people with a legal background are in demand.

Paralegal work in a large firm is surely an option. Good luck!

I don't doubt it's in demand but if you're moving to a common law country (anglosphere) from a civil law country (everywhere else) or vice versa you will need several years of reschooling before you will be hired for any kind of counsel at all. The difference in systems is too great.
Paralegal work in a large firm is surely an option. Good luck!
This is a good idea, although it's a big step down in wage it's more realistic to get such a job.

It obviously depends on what type of attorney you are and what areas you cover but if it's commercial then I suggest you focus specifically on US-Brazil and Brazil-US commercial entities who need regular advice on trading between the two countries, such as contractual advice or general legal advice. This would put you in a specialist category that may be in high demand. US law firms would then likely sponsor you. Obviously it would take a bit of work promoting yourself for this area of work but perhaps your girlfriend could help as well. I also suggest you getting in contact with international tax advisors(particularly Brazil-US) as they will always have clients who require legal advice also.

If this works you would have a solid income and a secure future.

Lol. I definitely can stand the cold
Even though I am a lawyer I am willing to work in any field actually.

I made a living for a long time as a paralegal. You got this.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I wouldn't come here to make it. The cost of living is extremely high. Education is very expensive. Health care is very expensive. Everywhere you turn you're tempted by finance-everything-at-30% interest. Rent, gas, food, all are through the roof at the moment. Probably not a popular post but just calling it like I see it.
