They guess going by last posts after prolonged silence, sometimes they have proof in the form of obituaries and news.

I have seen in some of the 'goodbye' threads, the OP something along the lines of "Mod, if I don't contact you by X time then close this account." It still isn't full confirmation, but the Mods might still act on it.
