All animals possess a survival instinct, obviously.
Individuals without this characteristic would not pass on their genes.
Humans are no different, but we have reason. We are able to reflect on our existence and do things beyond pure survival.
Most of us know that life is pure suffering with some moments of happiness, but in the end, the math doesn't add up.
Most don't kill themselves simply because of the instinct, but several individuals have managed to do so throughout history and continue to do so today. This is due to our incredible capacity for free will.
Life is a prison, and death is the key to the gate. And we are the only animals capable of making the choice to open it.
Think of all the animals in nature; suffering is constant and endless. They only don't kill themselves because they can't even think about their own suffering.
