https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...ory-ones-drove-deepest-depression-Ive-in.html

Julia Roberts sister committed suicide a few years ago and left angry notes to her Mom and Julia.

The DM comments really sicken me-the majority can't comprehend how family of origin issues can plague one for a lifetime, and culminate in the darkest of depressions and suicide in middle age.

Yes, we need to take responsibility for our lives no matter how painful our past or the trauma we endured but the question needs to be asked "how much can a person take?"

Am curious about others reactions to the comment section in the article.

I'll go and read the article in a moment plus comments. Before I do I will say that the daily mail . co . uk is read by, let's say, a particularly unpleasant section of the "British" public, who are, for the most part, as judgemental AF (and I rarely swear)

I'd like some of them (all of them) to climb down out of their ivory towers and live five minutes in someone else's shoes. Then maybe they would feel some empathy.

Sorry. Rant over. I hate being "English" sometimes :-( if it makes me in any way connected to people who do comments like that lot of harpies.

She and her half-sister Julia were 9 years apart in age, and by all accounts were never close. Blaming her family for her own weaknesses and failure is BS.

This one is cruel. A shit family can easily drive someone over the edge. I know it has me a number of times all the way up into the present.

Nancy was obviously a deeply disturbed individual who put the blame on everyone else instead of taking responsibility. I don't believe for one minute that anyone drove her to kill herself. She was sick.

This comment continues to shame the victim. Not okay. And the same below.

Regardless of Nancy's relationship with her mother and siblings--she and only she was responsible for her own health and feelings.

I feel for this woman, but her suicide is on her, and not her sister Julia - no matter how bad a sibling she was. I feel Nancy's final act of suicide was an act of revenge against her sister. No one should give up their life in that manner and for that reason.

Most of the comments are quite judgmental and blame Nancy. Truly sad.

Thanks for clarifying that—the demographics of readers of the DM. I suppose they are much like Fox News watchers over here.

We need @Johnnythefox to say what they are like, there's a sort of special way to describe them...

When you see steam coming out of this thread that will be me reading.

Often, the presiding comments you get here in news comments is someone ctb is, "how could they be so selfish" Just No. No wonder we can't talk about it.

I mean, we just don't know this woman's history of mental illness and drug use, nor do we know the dynamics of the family, so any speculation is just that.

True but my point is that 99 percent of the comments are extremely harsh towards Nancy. There was a reason why she wrote her note in that way, clearly her family was unkind to her unless she was totally delusional.

Also, mental illness is often a byproduct of a poor upbringing, and it's origins as an organic brain disease can't be taken as gospel as so many people think (ie chemical imbalance theory, etc).

I believe in the trauma model. I have no doubt Nancy has some serious trauma in her background. And a bullying older sister might have contributed.

I agree, the harsh judgement is very unfair and unwarranted. Who knows, maybe this woman was seriously delusional.

It's interesting that Roberts was involved in a dispute with the fiance over the estate... I mean, why? Unless she had a real axe to grind, why not let the guy have it??

I've been reading a lot about sibling bullying recently and it's truly awful the long term impact it has on an individual's life. Forgive my addled brain but there was an article, somewhere, that sibling bullying gives a much greater chance of having schizophrenia.

Yeah, I don't get that either. The man was employed, seemed to love Nancy etc.

At least we can conclude the family is seriously screwy—Julia is estranged from her other siblings, didn't speak to her Dad etc etc. I've seen this play out in my own family generation after generation and it has consequences, like Nancy.

The Daily Mail is a reactionary, right wing piece of trash read by retired colonels, blue-rinsed racists and pretty much anyone over the age of 50 who thinks political correctness has "gone mad" and we're all going not just to hell, but in a "handcart". It's owner is Lord Rothermere who, quite literally, thinks Hitler was a bit musunderstood. It's a profoundly nasty publication with a veneer of British upper-middle class sophistication but those who comment on their online output are such unutterably dreadful individuals in a barely concealed, genuinely sadistic pit of unfathomable rage that they should never merit serious discussion beyond "daily mail readers are cunts".

I've never read the Daily mail, it is a tory shite sheet read by xenophobic, right wing retards. The kind of people who camp out all week to get a glimpse of the Windsor clan and likely have their house decorated in the flag of the onion as I call it.

The typical reader probably believes anyone claiming benefits is only doing so because they want to and not because they have no other choice.

These are the kind of people who want to put the great back into Britbin and show the world that brittania still rules the waves.
I could go on but I think @Misanthrope and @Chinaski are better qualified to give an in depth insight into the type of scum that get an orgasm at the very mention of the word "queen"

I am curious about the Royal worship both in the UK and here (PBS had special coverage of the recent wedding, as did the Wash Post).

Why?

Because people are too dumb to realise that it's a diversion from what's going on behind the scenes.
It's like religion, people are brainwashed from an early age into believing you should kow tow to them.
I'm with France, Russia and China when it comes to treating royulty.

Oh dear me, if you want a rant from me, the Daily Mail is a good way to get me going. It just falls short of inciting hatred, but that is pretty much what it does. I will revisit this later and kindly ask you to never reference the daily mail again as it kills my soul to know it is getting more ad revenue. In the mean time here is a song or two to keep you entertained.

You beat me to it. I just stumbled upon this and came back here with my link to post!

It's basically a musical version of what @JustAboutDone, @Johnnythefox, and @Chinaski expressed!

Careful exposure to the Daily Mail will cause brain cancer. Because studies say so, studies I won't reference though, instead I will just repeat the word expert repeatedly. So you know it is true because unnamed experts, that say they are experts, with unlisted sources and studies have said so. Because they are experts you should totally believe them. I also have it on good authority from an expert that it will rain margarine tomorrow which is great for toast so experts say...

I know about Roberts sisters suicide, when it happened and the letter. I dont know what to think of it. But I think it must be really tough to be sibling of a world known celebrity and to have traumatic experiences with her/him. I mean whatever happens, the celebrity has army of blind devoted fans on their side, willing to defend them till the end.
