This sucks big time for me because reading is one of the few hobbies I have to pass the time. Every story I try to get interested in ultimately fails and I lose interest quickly.

When I am very ill, I have extreme brain fog and cannot read. I feel the loss so keenly. Then, when I get a little strength, I open a book and after a few pages, my heart is filled with joy. It's the only joy I have left.

I wonder what you mean by "every story… ultimatly fails".

I used to quite enjoy reading, but I haven't done it for a long time. I struggle with concentration. I lose interest quickly too. I think in general, I struggle to enjoy hobbies, I just do things to pass the time. Life just feels so empty.

I feel you guys. I lost interest in reading back in elementary. I was a huge bookwork then and read so much. I read all the Harry Potter books back then. We had a system in elementary where you would read a book, and take a test on a computer. The top 10 students at the end of the year for most points on those tests would get an award and a field trip. Two years in a row I made the top 10. First year 8th and second year 3rd. After that, I guess I just completely burned myself out. Thinking about starting again soon. Depression has caused me to stop enjoying games and sports as well like a user above mentioned, so I am hoping maybe reading will bring a spark.

Oh no :(( that sucks majorly!! Reading is one of my main hobbies too and i would be crushed if i can't find joy in it anymore... I still can, but i can only digest manga and fanfics lately. I bought a novel but it's boring as hell. All i can feel are dramatic angst... It's kinda cringe but it's fun, i guess.

I have to force myself to start reading something and continue doing it for about a week...then I kinda tackled my anhedonia and gotten back into the swing of reading. Most of the time I'm too tired from work though - it's a shame because I really love reading as well.

I had the same problem. In highschool I read myself into a reading burnout where it just didn't excite me anymore. I stopped reading so much and after a year everything returned to normal.

"every story… ultimatly fails".
What I mean is that new stories I try to get interested in fail to get me hooked to keep reading more of it. After the first few paragraphs I simply lose motivation.
I can't even read through forum posts without losing my train of thought.
I have that problem too.

I get jealous of the authors, the safe characters with shit to say and do. Self help books are the worst.

I was on a reading spree since the beginning of this year and I've managed to read books in 3-7 days (depending on the length). But now I haven't managed to read anything in 2 months and it's terrible. I should've read atleast 15 books in this time and not having done so is very distressing. I've tried to read more from the current book I've been reading and although the story is very interesting I simply can't.

I can understand what you feel. Rereading Le Petit Prince usually helped me relit my love for reading. Even listening to audiobooks worked too for a bit, but it depends on you. Maybe you might just need to change genres, reading can help with depression I think, taking your thoughts away from bad stuff and also working on your brain.

I hear ya. Me too. I've lost interest in reading, listening to music, watching movies and tv shows, going to movies, working out. I'm absolutely unmotivated to do anything I used to semi like.
Maybe, it's just temporary. Having depression can really mess you up….

Same, have t finished a book in so long, I buy them and then don't read them. Lost interest in all hobbies too, even tv shows. I'm just too devastated and broken and hateful of the human race and life in general. Can't be bothered

I understand, can relate. Reading is my portal from here. I, too, am unable to concentrate lately, nothing grabs me, books or otherwise. Maybe it's a phase? Big hugs xoxo

I used to read often when I was younger as well, and it was one of my favorite pastimes. Nowadays I don't really have the time and get distracted too easily, but I still love fiction and stories as a form of escapism from real life.

It's the same with me.
I used to read a lot of books.
Now I can read 1-2 pages, and that's it.
There is no interest.

The last book I read with interest is "Pet Cemetery" (Stephen King).
That was last year.

I haven't read anything else since.(((

Same here, but I picked up recently East Wind, West Wind by Pearl S. Buck and I find it moderately enjoyable. She's one of my favourite authors and also remembers me of my deceased grandmother, which introduced me to her.

Perhaps try with your absolute favourite authors? There are also books I can read several times, those that are about alienated, suicidal men with my same disposition, like The tree of Science or
No longer human. I wouldn't mind becoming as versed in No longer human as a religious zealot is of the Bible.

Well I do like Stephen King. Maybe i'll give some of his works a try since it's been a long time since i've read any of his Novels.

What about listening to audio books 📚?

One of the main problems with ME/CFS is extreme noise and light sensitivity. My doctors says it might be due to low grade brain inflammation. I cannot listen to Tv, radio, music etc.
