As someone who has dealt with both chronically, I don't think it's really a cut and dry answer. I think it highly depends on the person and the extent of the pain, physical or mental.

Yes, mental anguish is mostly what makes us perceive pain in the first place

I think it does no good for anyone to start attempting to quantify whose pain is worse than someone elses. In the end the worst pain is the pain that you, yourself, have to live with on a daily basis.

In my personal experience as someone with a lifetime of mental illness and a few years of ever worsening chronic health issues, I'd say mental pain is worse in its own right. They're quite different, though, so it's hard to compare. And that can only speak for my experience. Everyone perceives both mental and physical pain uniquely, so there is no correct answer here.

I always thought that those shouldn't be directly compared because they are two ENTIRELY different natures:
- Physical is immediate pain that puts in danger your physical life. It can be easily assessed and fixed with proper protocols;
- Psychological is like a broken heart/soul, there's no exact medicine and everyone is different, all "protocols" are gonna be different. It's like a poison that slowly consumes you compared to how immediate a physical threat would be.

A suicidal person and a person that has been shot are both at risk of losing their lives for example. Except the shot one is in physical pain and the suicidal person is in "psychological pain" which at times is just a slower death

That's at least how I view it.

Physical pain is what made me get extremely close to ctb, whereas decades of only having the mental pain never got me that close to it. It was only after the physical pain was able to be stopped after months that I was no longer at that point, the thoughts were more distant.

It depends.. my granda died of cancer and when he was in the terminal stage he was in unbearable pain 24/7 even though he was on morphine.

He couldn't even take a shower because it felt like cutting with knife when the water touched his body
