That I do not celebrate some events like my own birthday or Christmas? I have never really enjoyed them and I do not understand why they exist, but I have to celebrate them each year because I do not have a choice. If I tell people that I do not want to do anything on these days I am angrily told by relatives that something is "wrong" with me, and I tend to feel guilty about it.

Edit: This post probably should be in Off-topic - sorry.

Nothing wrong with that, people celebrate it mostly because "it should be that way".

I do not celebrate the holidays. It is your choice what does and does not have meaning so do not allow others to try and control what you value.

I've had the same view in respect to celebrations when I turned 15 years ago after having a near death experience. My dad I think understood to some extent but the rest of my family were incredulous. Now, the concept of family is totally absurd to me -- backed by thinkers like Engles, Gide, and Badiou. Any traditional structure is seriously called into question. You may come across or even develop your own thoughts and reasons on why you are indifferent to celebrations.

Nah. I don't care about my birthday at all and really, I would only celebrate holidays again if I had a family or lived with people who wanted to. I used to love halloween, but I haven't celebrated it in four years. I used to love christmas, but haven't celebrated that in three years. My mom died on christmas two years ago and it kind of ruined it for me but I actually would like to celebrate it again at some point. I just haven't had any desire or reason to lately because I've isolated myself for years and am now completely alone, so it would just be depressing.

No one HAS to celebrate anything. All of these holidays are social constructs created for the soul purpose of gaining money by corporations. But some people do find joy in them, but that's because they don't see the truth behind these holidays.

Some people are well aware but still simply enjoy it and there's nothing wrong with that either.

Oh totally true! And that's okay too! But when they get angry that some of us don't want to celebrate is when things change.

That's the same with me my birthday or Indian festivals is when my family have to pretend that I'm alive otherwise I'm rotting away by myself and not even a phone call. I hate these festivals for projecting a false image of my family to their friends and relatives.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I really want to respond to what everyone has said, but unfortunately I do not have the words in my mind right now to reply to all of them.

I like Halloween - it is the exception, it is the other ones I do not like.

And I think I can understand were you are coming from in regards to isolation, it is pretty boring celebrating it on your own. Sure you can make a Halloween costume, but if you have no one to go with you somewhere then it is depressing indeed.

I agree with this. Though having said that I do not think that social constructs are bad in all cases. If holiday events had another purpose besides profiteering like you have mentioned, or if their original purpose was restored (if they had one), then I might actually enjoy them. Except my birthday - I will never understand that one.

I feel the same way, I hate having to pretend to be happy just because it's christmas or your birthday or whatever. this time of year is always super lonely.

Definitely nothing wrong with it, I wouldn't be celebrating this stuff too if the people around me didn't force me to

I have no desire to have a birthday party. I only like Christmas because things go on sale. Halloween is okay. Anyther "holiday" I don't care about.

Sometimes it does make me anxious when I don't do anything "special" on those holidays, but it's completely ridiculous because those days at this point only exist to generate profit for companies. I guess one benefit is getting days off work (for some people) in the case of public holidays though.

Nah I hate that sort of "organised fun" when you're obligated to feel some way on a specific day. Last year I told my family I had work on Christmas Eve until 5pm and then again on Boxing Day so they'd have to go away without me and I'd have to be on my own for Xmas. It was amazing.

I don't think it's wrong to not celebrate events and I don't think you should feel guilty at all about it.

When I worked, I always tried to get scheduled for holidays, since those were easy shifts that paid extra. Since I no longer work, my only considerations are a few legal concerns, like a new year or certain birthday anniversaries, but I don't celebrate anything.
