I interpreted the question to be going to school for years, spending a lot of money, without getting a degree.

If the choice is between a degreed MS and PhD, that is different.

Ah, I see. If you have the grades and reccs to go for a PhD. I'd apply for both MS and PhD programs

i don't want to tell you this, believe me, but consider the phd. if you're in stem, it will be a big asset, and the phd program will likely pay you to get the degree. and then no matter what happens in your life, you are a dr.

it sucks, i ran experiments with bloody wrists and wrote a dissertation with sn in the closet. i never thought i could do it; i was sure i'd kill myself first. until one day it was done.
