Nearly every week, someone asks how to OD on OTC meds.

My idea is to add a megathread to the list of method megathreads in the Resources Compilation. The OTC OD Megathread would explain in the OP why OTC ODs don't work, written by someone far more knowledgeable than I, maybe researched using the site search. I don't care enough about the subject to put forth that kind of effort, but maybe someone else does. The OP could address diphenhydramine and Tylenol, and explain why such medicines are more likely to eff someone up than end their lives. Ongoing discussions could continue on the megathread, and people could be directed to the megathread instead of having the same explanations and conversations over and over.

Conversely, if there is any possibility that OTC ODs can be a reliable method, the megathread would be a good repository for linking studies and other resources, rather than having scattered all over the forum what little helpful information may actually have been shared if there is any chance it could be effective. The way things are right now, a bunch of people saying, "No, it doesn't work" is not always evidence-based (excluding anecdotal evidence of course), it's often more of a bandwagon.

Of course, some people may like explaining and having the conversations about why OTC ODs don't work, regardless of repetitiveness.. It may totally be their kind of interaction, or give them a sense of feeling useful and helpful, so a megathread may solve one issue but take away some people's personal senses of purpose and enjoyment on the forum.

Thoughts?

One could be started simply by posting this link.. and stating if you're considering OD as your CTB method, you can consult this resource.
https://sanctioned-suicide.net/attachments/listen_english-pdf.32719/

and conversations could spark from it and/or posting probable successes and failures so people can read other stories, etc. doesn't have to be started by someone who's an expert.

EDIT: What I don't liKe about this med list is it does not include the most common drugs we have at our disposal like antipsychotics, antidepressants, etc. I assume it's bcuz they just don't work? Or is this guide outdated?

This is a GREAT resource, I can't believe this is the first time I've seen it on the forum.

then OTC OD isn't something to be quickly dismissed like the other thread suggested, right?

There are 2 web links in the attachment but both are not in English so I'm not sure what they are saying or if there's a way to get an updated list if one exists? If i had a computer and not just my phone I would translate.

If you look at the link in the quote in your comment, there are no OTC meds, they're all prescription.

However, there are irl cases of people who ctb with OTC ODs, but it is difficult to get medical info online that says how much of a substance was taken, symptoms until death, how long to die, etc. Medical reports are also generally about treatment after discovery, not what happened between the OD and admission to the hospital. What we have on the forum are anecdotal accounts of survivors, such as hallucinations from diphenhydramine, liver effects of paracetamol/Tylenol, etc. The general response on the forum is quick dismissal, so if there's a case to be made for OTC ODs, a megathread would be a good place to put it, and if dismissal is the best answer, a quick link to the megathread will keep folks from having to pile up the dismissals on each thread to convince the member asking that it's a bad idea.

I guess the megathread would be labeled as prescription OD Megathread.. but in it it could address that OTC drug OD is highly unlikely and cause more harm than good etcetc . It could at least be given as a source to those asking everyday

Perhaps two megathreads, one for OTC and one for prescriptions. The OTC one would probably be short, but at least it would be a resource that could reduce the repetitive asking. And if folks found new info for OTC, then there would be a place to put it for quicker and easier reference.

Oh, sorry, I misinterpreted the meaning of OTC, I thought it included prescription
