As someone who's been in the system, I do feel your pain. It's anything but an easy situation.
Was barely able to avoid jail, but went to a forensic psych ward.
From my own experience, some things that have been lost can be found again. And even though a forensic setting isn't the best place to make friends, it's not the worst place either.
I don't know the severity of your crime or your region, but most low and mid security places aren't bad. Yes, you'll need to learn to live under a very strict system. But if you can deal with that, the people you'll live with are often more sociable and inviting than you might expect. Most people are just serving their time, trying to stay out of trouble. Often sociable as it can be a very lonely ordeal.
And for what it's worth, inside, most people just wanna try and have fun. Most of the patients I served my time with had been in jail for anywhere between 6 months and 2 years, which they described as very similar the ward, but double the amount of iron bars and concrete. And we had a lot of fun in the ward.
Sometimes I even think I was closer to happiness or contentment in the ward, than now I'm outside again.
