so I am someone who spoke to people when I was feeling suicidal, massive mistake, but I wanted help at the time.

people referred to me as being 'ill' and I didn't like it, I don't know about you guys but I just refer to it as 'being in a bad place'. I have had many visits to doctors and have not been diagnosed with any mental illness, I think its partly because they dismiss me as soon as I explain the trigger to this, but therefore im not even 'mentally ill', im just me. I just think 'ill' makes it sound like something its not. I really really hate it

Well, I am diagnosed with mental illness, BPD and Bipolar, so for me I think of myself as ill when both flare up. I guess it's different when you haven't got a diagnosis, but call it whatever makes it easier for you to deal with tbh. Not everything needs a label.

me and my councillor both call it 'being in a bad place', and we call any episode of impulsive madness 'a blip'. However others come up to me as say 'you're looking so much better now, you were so ill when I last saw you' and I really don't like it but I feel rude calling them out.

Well, you don't need to be rude you can just politely say 'I haven't been ill, just in a bad place recently or having a bad couple of months'. Like I said, call it whatever you feel most comfortable with and feel free to correct others, it's all about how you do it.

I have too many illnesses, mental and physical to count. My illnesses are a part of me. No different than my eyes. I am ill. Just as my eyes need glasses. It's factual. I have no problems with it. I couldn't help my physical and mental illnesses. But they are there, and I'm not ashamed.

If they call you ill, ask them if they would like to discuss it or do they have any questions about your illness.

There is too much stigma surrounding mental illness. The only way to stop the stigma is to talk about it.

I'm a completely lucid person. Never been diagnosed with mental problems. But I can say for certain that I say I want to die with as much understanding of my action and consequences of that action. There is not an illness involved. I simply want to stop being alive for very relatable reasons.

I'm the same way. No matter how you look at it, I'm I'll. I've never been called that, though. The closest thing I've experienced is talking to my best friend, telling him I don't know why I feel this way, and him saying it's not my fault, I have depression. But I don't mind that. It is what it is.

I guess its because I don't have a diagnosed mental illness, I had an acute stress reaction but its not the same. I think I relate the term ill to be a physical thing so when people call me ill it just feels wrong.

If it's a joke then nice. But if not I can say that the fundamental right in choosing to live or die. Is Not A Mental Disorder!
Its real. My opinion. What does it matter if one has a diagnosis? Diagnosis are made up by people. Why? For insurance purposes. Bottom line. People are not a text book diagnosis.

By the way. I can find a diagnosis for anything. Thr go to when there is really nothing wrong. Adjustment Disorder. The entire world has it. Show me one person who comfortably acclimates to a new situation. ;)

I feel like mentally ill is likened to being incompetent, or invalid, or "crazy". It's frustrating, to say the least.

Yeah the idea of a "mental illness" is just a metaphor anyway, it doesn't correspond to any actual *thing*... it's no more or less true than if someone said I had "bad karma" or something.

My family calls my mental illness as a "sickness" they would say that i'm "sick in the head". I hate it when they call me sick. I guess for me being sick is when your sneezing, coughing, having the flu, etc.

Firstly, I am going to straight up say that everyone is different and this is just my own experience.
In my circumstances I hate it because my personal "illness" has stemmed from ongoing traumatic external situations. I do feel I am naturally sensitive with an emotional allergy/intolerance to inequality, oppression, abuse, exclusion and everything else that is horrible about humanity. Oh and I should add gaslighting to that. Which people ironically prove when I have a flare up of that emotional allergy, won't listen to me when I politely assert myself, and subsequently call me crazy, mentally ill, disordered, complex etc. Don't get me wrong, I ain't perfect by far, but if someone confronts me that I've hurt them, I'm fair, I will listen, I'll apologise and make amends as much as I can.

I kind of like this quote

"Insanity is the only sane reaction to an insane society."
-Thomas Stephen Szasz

I feel for me it is so frustrating and disempowering and has created a lot of issues regarding stigma :aw:

My parents still think I'm ill to this day.
But then again, they are conservative Chinese parents who are brainwashed so it's hard to relate.

Smh.
