A while ago, there was this important festival (similar to thanksgiving/xmas) that got my family together. My family has always been terrible - during the days of celebration, without my permission, they would drink, smoke and gamble in my home from night to day without stopping. They were loud, stinky and commanded the younger ones like me and my cousins into doing their favor.
There was one year when my younger cousin (not of age) got severely sick and wanted to return home, yet his parents were too stuck in gambling to care, choosing to force him to stay in my house. He ended up so sick and distressed that he cut himself. In essence, the family was all about money, were abusive and constantly intruding.
I couldn't take it anymore one day. I was kind enough to allow them as I viewed it as a family thing a few times a year, yet it became so overwhelming for me due to stresses in life (imagine hearing a party crowd in your living room at 3AM when you have work the next morning). I tried to communicate nicely, and that failed. With no choice, I had to do it their way - I grabbed a knife, put on my best act and acted like a maniac. I threatened them that if they dare intrude again, who knows what I would do with the knife. I forced them to apologise to their children. They all left without a word.
And now, they are pretty much scared of me. They keep offering to buy me things (which they have never done) and never stood in my way again. I don't like to resolve issues like this but, oh well, it worked.
