I asked her "Why shouldn't someone want to die?"

She got three shitty answers from friends ("you can always be happy" and "family" x2) but hasn't come up with an answer herself. I just want to get this question on more people's minds.

That should be a pretty easy question for most people. Get a better therapist

A person shouldn't want to die because they value their mind, their body, and their self. And of course they could also value their loved ones. The decision of life and death is all about values. What do you like about your mind, body, self, loved ones? Do you like those aspects enough to keep you around? Those are the relevent questions.

Everyone seems to think I asked "Why shouldn't someone kill themselves?" That's not what I asked.

"Why shouldn't someone want to die?"
Are you looking for an answer or do you just want us to think about the question from a philosophical point of view?

I tried Google, but it didn't understand the question :smiling:

"Why shouldn't someone want to die?"

Simplest answer: People shouldn't wish for death because there is a lot to live for.
There is a lot to see and experience in the world, both good and bad. Whether you personally have a reason to live or not is another problem altogether.

also have you ever patted a cute dog and they get really excited and start wagging their tail ;)

Live for the moments of excitement in life, you may not always be happy but there are times where it would feel worth it, I think thats what most people live for even if its not entirely something permanent, life just isn't like that unless you live carefree. You shouldn't live life for the pleasure of anyone else but enjoy the fact you have a chance to feel these things and experiences, just run away from everything and do what you want to do.. So you shouldn't want to die, in those moments in your life you do feel good and inevitably find love or happiness through whatever it is you choose even temporarily you get a chance to feel that. Life isn't permanent i think the goal is to just experience as much as you can idk

Interesting idea. For me it's a bit like getting up and asking yourself the question "do you want to stay home all day, or do you feel like going out/doing something?"

Because death is the absence of everything, it's a bit like one of those pointless days where you just lounge around. There's no stimulation, no real sensory pleasure, no interaction. There's nothing. If you choose to go out though, you'll be exposed to things - good and bad. So to me it really comes down to whether or not you still want to experience anything, a mixed bag as it all is.

There's also the issue of ctb itself, which is difficult and fraught with potential pitfalls. So the two combined (the absence of absolutely everything + risky/painful ctb) is enough to deter most people, I think.

That's it. See how easy that was?
Its a perfect answer. Ive seen a wonderful therapist who has been practicing for years. She has always said this. Hope is the one thing to keep us going and not pursuing death
Its true. The strength i find in a glimmer of hope that things may improve is monumental.

Saying family isnt the greatest reply from a therapist who should probably know the basic fundamentals. Family is no way enough when the suffering is so severe. A glimmer of hope that suffering may end or improve could change every thing
Hope is just disappointment waiting to happen.

Only depressed suicidal people would say that......oh hang on a minute

There are many things that are important, but if you miss them in life, then curiosity in waiting a bit longer makes a point.

Exactly, and that decision should be only made by that said individual based on that said individual's values. I hate the fact that the majority of people in society (especially the religious) feel the necessity and obligation to impose their values on these people, thus overriding said individual's free will. When confronted about it, they often have half baked arguments, or arguing from emotions, fallacious and illogical responses, and/or just outright denying/lying or bullshitting like cherry picking (basically they don't want to admit their own inconsistency, hypocrisy, or wrongs and instead flaunt their moral superiority).
Everyone seems to think I asked "Why shouldn't someone kill themselves?" That's not what I asked.
Yeah I think most people in society are like that, especially when it comes to death and suicide, they often forgo logic and rational reasoning, but instead resort to emotional appeals, illogical responses, and what not. Worst yet are the ones who probe, pry, and even threaten to take action/intervene by forcing "help" (which is code word for involuntary commitment, locking one up against one's will) on said person.

I mean, it's obvious. Non depressed people will tell you their reasons which don't apply to most of us. It's pointless to talk to them about those things.

I think the easiest answer, to me anyways, is curiosity. What will happen next? The more bored you get the more you want to CTB. Every time I get really absorbed in some fun project or something it makes me a whole different person. When I keep getting the same shit thrown me every day it just makes me hate life.
