There are political tensions. A new war is not fully impossible anymore. There is a part of me that does not give a shit. I had the same feeling at the start of the pandemic. I kind of hoped this virus could finally kill me. I have simliar thoughts about the war. If nukes are used the chances are high that I die.

On the other hand it would be of course horrible that so many innocent people would die. So I am not hoping for this scenario. My friends for example don't want to die. However a part of me hopes very much that something could kill me (fast and/or peacefully)

On another level I think the likelihood that this war would probably lead to a huge economic or humanitarian crisis and not necesarrily kill me is quite high.
Rationally I need to hope very much that a war can be prevented. On the other hand I cannot really influence anything and if this is my fate then whatever. I probably just have to kill myself some years earlier. But for my loved ones and all the innocent people it would be of course a catastrophe.

How do you feel about this scenario?

As someone religious would say; "Let God sort us out" - we are not worth any more than that - and let's hope for a quick end, if it comes to that.

I think that world relations are falsely portrayed as tense in order to achieve 1984's 'war is perpetually about to come' scenario. It's more like a 'get this over with already, will you? I'm bored' thing, but the news scream so loud that it's also become a cry-wolf situation that never goes anywhere, so i don't think things are bad at all.

I think war will play out much like it has for the past few decades

Big countries attacking small resource rich countries

I think we will continue to see troop build ups. To threaten each other. But I do not think this will result in WW3. I am pretty sure nato will up their military spending even more after this though, possibly resulting in another Cold War. But not a WW3. All the 100k+ troops on the border can't stay there for to long since the ground will start to thaw making a ground invasion much harder. We will know for sure in about 40-60 days. But we might see something similar to the annexation of Crimea but in this case to donbass.. I would not rule that out as a unlikely scenario..2014 was not that long ago.

It all just seems like simple budget justification to me. The armed forces need more money, we need to be reminded about the big threat posed by "the enemy" and thank goodness for our rulers to protect us, etc. Pretty unlikely a war breaks out due to extensive interconnectedness of populations and economies, lots of people moving back and forth and mass communication. As usual a real actual war occurring doesn't really help anybody all that much enough for one side or the other to cross a red line.

I really think that traditional large scale wars are a thing of the past. We'll probably see some small regional conflicts in the near future, but nothing like ww2 or even close to it, at least not during our lifetimes.

However, the humanitarian crises that will come from those conflicts are what's really scary. There's a real chance that this decade will be marked by mass migrations.

Major conflicts between powerful nations are obsolete due to the most powerful ones having plenty of nuclear weapons. Nobody big wants to start a major war lest they be on the receiving end.

Wow. 🙄

Honestly, with the people currently in power and the recent history of people in power I think there's every chance some idiot will eventually let their pride and bravado force a hand somewhere somehow. All this posturing with nukes and troops has a pretty logical conclusion imho.

War and pandemics have a real impact on the world whether it 'the world continues either way' or not (obviously). Many countries are in huge amounts of debt. The citizens of these countries are facing sharp rises in the cost of living on top of it. There is a cost of living crises on the doorstep and it's not going away any time soon. Covid has crippled some countries economies and to shrug its impact off indicates real ignorance, naivety and dare I say priveledge.

I think about (and hope for) this everyday. Unfortunately it won't happen for the reasons mentioned in this thread.

A nice thought though:

There isn't going to be a war. Speaking for the us but we have so many troops and then there is also the reserve troops. If it were to break out it's highly unlikely you'd be drafted also considering the advancment in technology and lack of need for boots on the ground+ MAD and that jazz

I would welcome the war. It may give a new beginning to the planet. If we are lucky a lot of the greedy, ruthless rich would be gone. But then I am only dreaming.

Eventually, conflict will likely break out after resources become scarce in the wake of mass ecological destruction and climate change. A real sense of panic and impending doom would be necessary which can't be found in many countries whose populations have been numbed by popular culture and the other irrelevant things that are made up in order to distract from the activities going on behind the scenes. In this case it would be more like a war for survival than anything political.

A full scale war between the major powers is less likely. Proxy wars with "third/second world" countries, cold wars, and culture wars are what have been the dominating force for the past few decades, and they're probably more effective than the traditional way of doing things.

Yeah I think mass migration will be a huge topic. Also because of the climate change.

I agree with many of you that WW3 is pretty unlikely due to the interconnections for example the economical ones.
On the other hand during the cuba crisis the world was on the edge of an atomic war. If there is a miscommunication a huge war could start by accident. I think even scientists evaluate this scenario as a big threat. (e.g. I think Noam Chomsky)

There are so many countries with nukes and more and more nukes exist in general. If there will happen something like ww3 it is more likely the cause will be a coincidence. For example due to to a misunderstanding (in Syria) Russia and Turkey almost started a war some years ago.

Can't exist without the deaths and consumption of many other life forms. I'm not saying they necessarily deserve to die for that. All I'm saying is they're not 'innocent'.
