In my case it is a car and the money in the bank. If I leave a writing apart from the farewell letter where I indicate the possessions that I give to my mother, would it work legally? Or by not having a wife/children she would be the closest, so she would receive the money from the bank account and my car anyway, right?

I think that --- If you are in the US and she is your closest heir, then along with your letter, she should get what you want for her to have.

Once all the bills have been paid the rest should go to her. (UK)

I'm going to look just in case how it is in Spain but I imagine it will be similar. In my case, luckily, there are no debts, the only pending payments would be for electricity and water...and maybe a month's rent more, depending on when they found me.
