It deprives your cells of oxygen. It's supposedly mildly to moderately uncomfortable, it wouldn't feel like suffocating but you'd be nauseous and dizzy and possibly in some pain. Takes approximately 20 minutes for one to go unconscious if done right.

From the PPH - The following time-line was reported from an observed death from sodium nitrite:

• At 3 mins dizzy
• At 5 mins very drowsy, responsive
• At 12 mins unconscious
• At 15 min deep sleep/unrousable
• At 25 mins increasing cyanosis, steady shallow breathing
• At 40 mins death
