Before things get devastating. I figure if it gets bad enough then death would be easier to embrace, but it seems much more rational to get out earlier- when things have continually sucked.

So is there a way to achieve this determination without the use of drugs?

I realize it's kind of a silly question because "those that figured it out already died". But maybe there are some people who aren't suicidal & stick around to offer wisdom like this.

death: the cure for life

I've found these things useful (accept death):
  • wanting to ctb, knowing you wont be able to experience any good things you've experienced once (in case you've had any)
  • knowing everyone will have the same fate, some die young some old, its part of this life
  • believing in a spirit/soul, psychedelics do cause ego death; the death of your survival preservation mechanism and thus seeing you are eternal nature (in case you believe that)
  • meditation which also can cause ego death and thus minimizes survival preservation mechanism
  • you're no longer a slave, you won't feel the pain which has let you to this place
  • watch stories, videos about people telling you what they have experienced during their nde's; Love, Peace, Light, angels..
giving up hope:
  • just dwelling in those memories where life just suc*ed, if you start focusing mostly on those memories, you convince your mind that most of your life was pain and it will continue like this since your mind has no other reference than the one you give it.
  • let's be real, we don't have to convince ourselves that there is no real hope out there, this place is doomed, diseases everywhere, if not death by any of these, then it will be something else.

I don't know about you, but after a certain age (like 30) I feel as though death starts to creep up on you. Any financial collapse is the least of my worries, I just don't feel as active anymore, I get tired more easily or some problems start appearing in my body that gets me really worried. Then it feels like anything could happen that could seriously mess me up . It might not be as bad if I had money or savings to deal with it, but i don't even have an income or much of a savings, nobody is going to genuinly care for me, so if anything comes up thats it for me. When my uncle got a terminal illness in his 30's, he had to quit his job, his family and hobbies to live at the hospital. Then they basically just waited till he rotted to death at the hospital for a few years (he was going blind and everything). The people in charge of modern medicine aren't exactly for peaceful or diginifed death. How I see it is, its either you finish whatever it is you wanted to do in your life (traveling, meeting someone, or getting something) then when you think you've had enough you then honorably step back and exit. Or you could keep clinging on to life and playing the death roulette. Its your choice.

Hope and SI are the greatest obstacles to a peaceful CTB .. most times the hope is a false one but it still holds us back thus making things more miserable n depressing .. Then when we think ctb is the way out and plan for it SI strikes and we don't go ahead with it ... So back into the same loop ...false hope + SI .... At least that's what my situation is .... It really sucks.

My hope was gone a long time ago, but practical difficulty of ending my life is making it very hard for me to leave. Family are trying to prevent it. I don't know how to answer this since long for death.
