In the past I usually always finished the games I was playing and I was strictly only playing one game at a time and was so immersed and had so much fun with it that I didn´t consider not finishing it but nowadays I am not as entertained by video games and even greater games like Red Dead Redemption 2 I have not finished but come back once in a while to do a mission mostly like a chore despite the game being objectively good.

One thing I noticed I lack is the excitement to go exploring which usually makes the games so much more fun and exciting and longer I also have tried a few older games in different genres which I also haven´t finished and I have a hard time accepting this probably because I am a perfectionist so it gives me a little OCD knowing I haven´t finished the games.

How do you guys feel about not finishing a video game?

It can be somewhat of an annoyance, struggled getting to games, continuing or finishing for some time now. Even for games I genuinely enjoy. Actually, same with any hobby even

Nowadays I try avoid making it a big deal and try alter my view to generally help with what I can on this. I don't need to finish games I'm not interested in, just as I don't need to finish games for them to do their job. Can avoid the idea of focusing on the finish line or looking at a list of games and paralyzing myself with repeatedly saying "I need to finish this" as I look through them

It can still be unpleasant, but it is what it is. I've come to terms with it to a degree and started enjoying games more- when I'm allowed to function enough to play them

Usually I feel terrible, awful, like a complete failure. Not finishing a game I've started always makes me feel worse than if everyone I ever cared about died.

It's too bad I've left so many unfinished by this point….

Usually, for me, it's the same with everything I do or consume. I tend to take on something with full dedication. Sometimes I can enjoy playing even a mediocre game because it's always a challenge and maybe some kind of story. I think I might just like to finish things. The only exceptions are those games that literally annoy me without bringing any pleasure.

I don't understand people who buy games only for them to gather dust in their library, because it's just money spent for nothing. Also, I am convinced that sometimes games require you to make a conscious effort to get involved and start to really enjoy the process because a good game is a new mechanic that you have to master, as well as the logic of the game. If it seems to me that I am not ready to spend time on it at the moment, then more often than not I do not start at all. Of course, there are times when I drop the game, but that's more the exception than the rule, and somewhere in the back of my mind I remember that I have an unfinished game and go back to it sometime later. That way, I don't have a whole bunch of unfinished games. A pause can also be useful sometimes, especially when playing puzzle games. The rule you wrote about - don't start a hell of a lot of games at once - also helps.

You should try to play sekiro or elden ring. You'll get hooked because these games are awesome. Cheers 🥂

Sekiro is one of the very few games I got the platinum trophy for.
I love Elden Ring but it is just too large a game for me to even think about replaying.

Mostly indifferent to unfinished tasks in general so I have left many games unfinished all over the place both on pc and consoles, probably due to losing my attention span. But there is the occasional game that I finish, it's just more often than not any game I buy will be forgotten about after a few hours of gameplay and then collect dust in my virtual library.

I used to be more in to video games when I was younger. I had a social circle that spent lots of time playing certain games. But as I got older, I noticed it didn't really excite me anymore. "It's just a game". I could spend hours and hours in front of the screen, to complete tasks that don't give me any pleasure, or sense of accomplishment. I honestly thought there was something wrong with me because other people didn't change much. Nowadays I pretty rarely play any games, it just feels too easy, or like I am wasting my time- I don't have any online friends who would influence me to continue them. I rather work on my other hobbies and see where they will take me.

I don't care at all. I enjoy video games for the immersion/escapism aspect and I'm not concerned with powergaming or advancement really. But then I am 40 and it would be a bit silly if I was.

I used to always try and 100% games and get platinum trophies. I'd never move on to a different game until completing the one I was playing.

Now I just play RPG story driven games. The only games I've played and completed in the last two years are Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royal and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. I bought Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth three months back but haven't found the motivation to play it yet. My PS5 is very dusty!

It's funny, when I was younger I never thought I'd get bored of video games but I'm just really struggling to find the motivation to play them at the moment.

I've got my eye on Metaphor: ReFantazio, interested to see the reviews it gets.

I perpetually restart games, sometimes multiple times in one sitting. Anytime I'm doing something and think "oh I should've done this before that, I should've bought this upgrade first, I should've planned the base like this instead" and so on, I will restart the game with the new plan. Not always or necessarily compulsively, but it's just a habit. Games I've been playing recently are Path of Exile, Factorio, Necesse, Rimworld.

My latest kick is playing roguelikes(lites? Fuck it idk) except with a self-imposed permadeath rule 🙃 soulstone survivors I'm going at now. If I think I'm going to die, I have to pause the game and surrender, I'm not allowed to actually be killed lol.

It's frustrating but I can't stop, well maybe I can, but I don't wanna! 🤪

If I pay $60 for a game with 100+ hours of content and only play it for 5 hours and then never touch it again that does bother as me, as it feels like I threw my money into the wind.

But if I pay $x for a game and get at least x hours of gameplay out of it I feel content even if I don't necessarily finish it, although if I get stuck on the last boss or the last level or the last area of the game before giving up that is pretty frustrating.

I have been thinking about those games especially Elden Ring since I know some people who have played thousands of hours and still are entertained, the problem is those type of games usually don´t excite me but maybe at some point I should just try something new again instead of always going for the same genre of games I hope that I might get surprised because maybe I am just bored of FPS games who knows.

But I am currently getting my old PS2 to work again so I hope it will be fun to play some old games again at the very least nostalgic and also special to use a controller since I stopped playing Playstation after PS2

I might also just need a break, if I don´t enjoy the PS2 games I will force myself to not play for a long time then maybe it will be more fun again, I miss being excited about playing games and having fun exploring

What hobbies do you have? The things you describe is very relateable although I wish it wasn´t but I have been thinking about starting hobbies but I am just so bad at doing new stuff and feel like I can´t get excited about anything anymore (anhedonia) but maybe I should just take a leap of faith and just do it in particular I would like drawing or painting but I don´t know where to start, I used to draw A LOT as a kid but stopped but drawing is something I remember I could get totally lost in and spend a lot of time on and that would be nice if I could do that again like an old immersion since I can´t really immerse myself in games anymore.

Not even Red Dead Redemption 2 which I just played again but tbh and I might be the first person saying this but the graphics suck, I have spend so much time trying to get it right and either the models look extremely good or lighting and folliage look crap etc. and don´t get me started on the hair in the game it´s awfull it takes me out of the immersion when it doesn´t fit together, either all look mediocre or everything amazing but still too sharp outlines on the characters and hair still looks like crap, I miss how simple the graphic setting was in older games nowadays you have to spend so much time looking up videos about it because apparently setting everything to high or ultra doesn´t work I also don´t think it helps I watched a lot of YouTube videos of the game so in those videos everything looks amazing probably because they play in 4k so when I get in the game everything looks off and I even have a RTX4070 gpu still isn´t enough apparently or I haven´t cracked the "code" for the optimal graphics it´s like a freaking minigame where you have to figure out the right graphics, I remember being more immersed in South Park The Stick of Truth despite anhedonia because it looked spot on the series which doesn´t look realistic so I think that is why older games work so maybe I should try Elden Ring or WoW because at least it doesn´t look real but these modern games that come so close to looking real yet doesn´t puts me off the immersion at least either look real or don´t.

I am not quite that thorough I just want to complete the story mode that is enough for me.

Yeah it´s really tragic I also never thought I would be bored with games that was some of the most fun as a child.

Starting a new hobby always takes its time before becoming a habit (some studies say about 60 days). Although it's much pressure to master some skill, one could simply start drawing by just expressing what's on their mind, like by drawing certain character(s) they like over and over, until they learn to use their hand properly.

One thing that has influenced me a lot lately, is a book called The Artist Way by Julian Cameron, which has basically created a path for me to better hone my own creativity. It gives great tips on how to improve your life overall if you feel rather stuck.

Sometimes uncompleted, other times I just can't be bothered with finishing the whole thing. I suffer with burn out so I have many things I haven't completed…not just including games

Manga,anime,learning, routines, people…
I just get bored way too easily. I find something stimulating in the moment, only for my brain to grow old and tired of it - searching for other things to fill it's time with.

I'm likely much older than you (44) and likely nowhere near as good at gaming. When I was younger, there were many more games I hadn't finished compared to those I had. We didn't have the internet for cheats back then. I've had to watch YouTube walk throughs to see how some of them ended. Lol. Seemed so obvious when you see it. I've had to use YouTube to finish games like Subnautica. Plus, while I loved that game, it also scared the shit out of me! It was nice to have some forewarning over what enormous monster was waiting around the corner.

I mainly felt frustration really. There are loads of games I've gotten stuck on and given up.

Does the book teach me how to draw? Because when you look up videos on YouTube it gets overwhelming like when they draw a person they start with many circles and go from there, is it even necerssary? Like I bet many good drawers don´t do that or do you absolutely need to do that?

Very relateable it was even brought up today at a meeting with my shrink among others that since I have autism or actually Aspergers I tend to hyperfixate on a certain thing and get very motivated in the beginning but I burn out very fast also like series, there are several series and anime I wanna watch through but I end up getting bored so fast it sucks, even now writing this I am so exhausted but felt I needed to answer people today since you took your time posting on my thread.

I get that, I am 30 and feel like I am past my peek in competetive gaming it´s sad really, when I was younger I would have so much hope for the future and also when playing video games like Counter Strike I would feel I was so good at the game and I could be better some day because I was young and the time seemed infinite now time has caught up to me which has made me realize all the dreams are gone also when it came to gaming like if I fantasized about becoming a pro Counter Strike player I know that would never happen. I really miss being hopeful for the future even if it was unobtainable because when being young I didn´t see it that way dreams could be achieved it was just time that was between me and my dreams at least that was how it seemed I know now that wasn´t true and despite it not being true I would love to go back to that blissfull state of mind where hope filled so much despite hope being complete bullshit, I just miss the ignorance and naivete that state of mind makes life a million times better.

It does not directly teach you how to make art technically, but how to become a more creative person. What's special about it is that it helps you to manifest synchronicities with the course content, where you take control of different aspects of your life and create a blueprint of what you would like to accomplish as an artist.

Generally you learn to draw in the same way as at school, which is that you are given a clean sheet of paper and you usually get to choose what you are interested in first. For example, I didn't start drawing just circles, but I made ball heads out of them, adding details and bodies. When you practice enough to make neat lines, you can start sketching something. I've got myself a couple of beautiful dolls from the web where I've looked at the model and anatomy and otherwise I use intuition and some reference pictures from time to time.

I don't care about 100% completion (iirc I've only intentionally done that for one game I really enjoyed, Evoland 2) but I generally at least complete the main stuff of the games I play, possibly more if it's fun to do side stuff. I didn't bother beating the final boss of the Elden Ring DLC because it wasn't particularly interesting or fun for me and I didn't want the rewards, but I did do all the side bosses and dungeons

The doll part sounds interesting but I guess any object could work and just do it over and over to improve and probably visualize between drawings what needs to be different to make it look better.
