I don't like how everything is now being blamed on coronavirus lockdown.

According to the media, everyone is feeling depressed because of the lockdown.

Not a big fan. Of course, a lot of people who have suicidal urges might be in a tough spot mentally despite having a positive outlook on live.

I can't help but feel like if they get better, good for them, the survivorship bias could have them truly believe 'suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem' and that promotes the idea that suicide is wrong and should be made so goddamn inconvenient to follow through with.

But what the flip do I know anyway?

I quite agree, though lockdown is indirectly causing my depression as it's making it harder for me to get work

While I agree to a point, I do think that the pandemic and lockdown have increased isolation, uncertainty (economic and otherwise), and anxiety for many people, and that probably isn't helping the situation.

I do personally believe that the lockdown could make people get more depressed; but not a healthy one. If someone feels suicidal during this times he/she already had those thoughts on his/her mind. The thing is that the lockdown could trigger those again or worsened those but I don't think a normal person would get depressed and suicidal all of a sudden. Obviously there are exceptions but in a general level that's what my thoughts are.

I think those articles are stupid. I dunno, maybe they help people who aren't really suicidal and do not actually want to die, but as someone who has considered suicide since childhood, a "self-care box" and "you're just having a bad day, it'll get better!" just isn't helpful. At all.

As for the corona situation, I think everyday life is better like this. Much less pressure on being normal and expectations to participate in stuff, people keep their distance, and I feel more free than I have in years. If my future wasn't so glum I would have enjoyed this (except for people actually getting sick and dying, as well as financial issues, but as a pure egoistical view point of the situation).

I'm mostly indifferent toward articles like this. I don't care for them but they might help someone else. Having said that there are a few bits in it that I don't agree with...

There is a section entitled "It's OK to talk" and it says: "It can sometimes feel quite shameful when we have these thoughts and we feel like no one really cares. But actually, there are lots of people that do, whether that's friends, family, your GP or an advice line." This isn't true for everyone. Not all people have loving families and friends. In fact some folks want to commit suicide exactly because they can't attain these kind of relationships. For example: what about the old person who has become estranged from their family? What about the quiet kid who is constantly rejected by their peers? Life isn't a fairtale; not all humans are valued equally.

"Of the 5,691 people who took their own lives in England and Wales last year, about three quarters were men." This isn't suprising at all... And they say that men have it too easy.

The last part talks about having a care box - "You can kind of pick it up when you're feeling really low as an act of self care." Yes it is good to look after your own health however this concept won't help a suicidal person in the long run; especially if that persons reasons for wanting to CTB are external. You can think positive and read as many "spiritual guru" e-books as you want, it's not going to make the crippling rent and living costs magically dissapear. We don't just need self-care we also need to care for each other.

i don't like it.

it's assuming that everybody has a support system, or people who genuinely care about them. not to mention suicidal thoughts aren't just a "bad day". for me, no matter how "good" my day is, i always want to die at the end of it. so yes, sometimes it is a bad life.

people need to stop assuming that their story is everybody's story.

I think suicidality is different for everyone who is affected by it so I guess that some people might be genuinely helped by articles like that - good for them!
But then, of course, there's the rest of us!

I understand that they were trying to do a good thing with their notes (no matter how annoying it is for some of us) but the picture of one of their notes was not well chosen since it states a lie.... "Suicide doesn't end the chances of life getting worse".... of course it does! Life cannot get worse for the person who has died by suicide as they no longer have a life to get worse. (The second part is true even though it might not work out that way as possibilities are endless despite not being guaranteed).

Very annoying, someone on facebook posted this.

"
FYI, the relapse and overdose rate has increased by 30% since March 2020. Mental health issues related to our lockdown and the pandemic are especially hard for people with depression.
NAMI, The National Alliance on Mental Health have a 24 hour helpline: 800-950-6264.
Please could any two of my Facebook friends just copy and repost to share the helpline far and wide?
Just two. Any two. Say done.
"

I tried to comment with a link to this thread to highlight the reality but it was blocked. Seems like SS is on the FB blacklist.
