I see that there are conflicted opinions about how dangerous it is to choke youself. Some say that it needs couple of minutes of choking while unconcious to get brain damage. Some others say that choking just for a little bit is still dangerous and can cause brain damage. But in martial arts they use the chokehold all the time. Although they usually stop before unconciousness as the althete pats the arm of the other to signal submission. And also chokehold might be safer that other things like getting hits on the head which could cause concussions and brain damage like that. They also use choking in BDSM, but i believe that they dont usually go far enough to cause unconsiousness. Also police can use the chokehold on a suspect but i guess thats a last resort. So what's the deal? Is the risk enough to take into account?
Also I need to mention that excessive pressure, that may be caused by a rope, can cause physical damage on the blood vessels, the trachea, the nerves, and the neck in general. I'm obviously asking because I want to try and practice partial hanging, and the last thing I want is to end up with a brain damage or any permanent damage. I would have to go with full then. Or maybe I'm just a pussy.

It takes a minimum of 4-6 minutes to expire via strangulation. If you don't die you run a VERY high risk of winding up in a chronic vegetative state & totally dependent on others for everything including toileting. When I was a nurse I had patients that were complete "vegetables" because of it. Imagine how long a day is when you're trapped in a completely broken body.
Please rethink! 🤗🌹💔

well i know that if you are choking for a couple of minutes you will get brain damage. I was talking about choking for some seconds, until you pass out. would such a brief amount of time still cause damage? cause i bet many people here have tried this a couple of times

Assuming that the choke is released as you go unconscious, it's not very dangerous.
Assuming that the choke isn't properly released, the assessment changes radically, though.

I'm not sure if there is any research on doing it frequently over long time, though.
I've never heard of anyone seriously hurt by it in martial arts. (As you say, it's often seen as much safer than knock outs.)
I have heard about deaths and injuries from autoerotic BDSM though, where people failed to get out of the choke.

I fail to see why one would "practice". The mechanics are simple.

There are some risks. A handy thing to do would be to research "breath play" with bdsm as it is basically the same thing and you can take note of safety measures from there.

  • Learn to choke yourself correctly. Start by putting pressure on the sides of your neck instead of the front as you can damage your windpipe if you press on the front of your neck.
  • Know that repeatedly choking yourself can also trigger fight or flight at some point and you might end up doing some psychological damage to yourself (rare but no unheard of).
  • If you are practicing NEVER tie off/anchor whatever you are using. Always make sure your ligature will immediately come loose when you lose consciousness.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings. If you are not laying down, make sure you are not going to fall over and bonk your head on something. Have a soft spot to land when you pass out.
This is just from a quick search. I am sure there is more out there.

Oh I'll make sure to HAVE an anchor. I wouldnt want to miss that death opportunity. Thanks for the reply though.
Anyways, from what ive concluded, there is NO safe way to do this. Even though the risk is low, it very much exists. So I'll be cautious.
