There are more than one type of hemlock: the tree, water hemlock, and poison hemlock. The Canadian Hemlock tree is not poisonous (although for clarity's sake, you still probably shouldn't eat it!). Water hemlock and poison hemlock are both poisonous, but with different compounds causing their toxicity.

Water hemlock, of which there are five subspecies is deadly within hours if ingested. Symptoms are seizures, rapid heart rate, frothing at the mouth, and respiratory distress. Death comes via a final, horribly long seizure.

Poison hemlock is very similar, with minor differences in the roots and leaves. The root and the liquid it contains is deadly toxic (the rest of the plant is not as poisonous, but will still make you sick), with similar symptoms to those of water hemlock, but death in this case comes because respiratiry paralysis stops the victim from being able to breathe.

As far as I'm concerned death from either of the hemlocks would be quite painful.

I'm talking here about Conium maculatum which grows wild in much of Europe. (If you are on another continent, you will need to do some more research.) Eating about 10 leaves is usually fatal. Basically it sends you to sleep, and then you die, so it ought to be painless, or at worst not very uncomfortable. The easiest way to get some is to go out and gather some. Hemlock belongs to a group of plants called umbellifers, that all look rather similar until you get to know them, so if you want to gather the plant yourself you would need to learn a little botany so you can tell them apart, and also so you can learn which kind of habitats the plant tends to grow in. It isn't very difficult - and it is actually quite interesting - but you would have to make some effort.

What is your source for Coniine leading to LoC first before death of repiratory paralysis?
As far as I read so far death occurs while being fully conscious.
