if someone gets themself faint underwater, and there's no one around to save them, is that it? do they just die then?

You fall unconscious when your brain doesn't receive the oxygen it needs. When you're submerged underwater, no oxygen can be delivered, thus preventing you from regaining consciousness. This is the case in many accidental shallow water blackout deaths. So to answer your question: yes.
