On CNN tonight, I learned of a new approach to saving people called The Columbia Protocol. It is a Q&A provided to concerned colleagues, neighbors, friends, and family of a depressed or suicidal person. If the person answers Yes to some or all of the questions (ie. Have you actually had any thoughts about killing yourself?), the person asking the questions is told to ESCORT their afflicted friend/colleague/family member to the nearest hospital. In my state, I guess using a gun would be OK to get that suicidal crazy lunatic some good, solid help. I find this very scary, perhaps horrifying, but also amusing. I so hope people are savvy enough to know that if someone looks them deeply in the eyes and starts asking questions about suicide, they may be caught up in the Columbia Protocol. Say NO to all questions! I fear for this world.

Reminds me of the little page of questions they attach to the front of the paperwork at my doctors office trying to screen out suicidal people with about the subtlety of an elephant.

This could be a positive thing. I believe many people are depressed from trying too hard to be part of society, constantly surrounding themselves with toxic assholes known as "friends and family".
If depressed ppl start isolating to avoid the Columbia Protocol shit, some of them will inevitably discover they feel better without their toxic social group around, and improve in isolation.
Not many though, the social-brainwashing is pretty concrete for most.

This is aking to a citizen's arrest (how is anyone to 'escort' someone-one else who does not want to comply but by force?) while officially being suicidal, planning or attempting suicide is not a crime. Brave new world here we come.

In the Soviet-Union and the eastern block it was also common practice to use friends, family and co-workers to spy on each-other. This is going one step further: not only is it the job of every citizen to spy on one-another, they also have the duty to arrest them if any wrongdoing has been observed.

I do wonder how this will play out legally: as far as I know in any legal system worth the name citizens are not allowed to use force except in the case of lawful defense of self and/or others and perhaps citizen's arrest. Since this is neither logically it should be illegal to use force on a supposedly suicidal person (at least by a citizen) and charges could be pressed if it does happen aswell as civil lawsuits initiated. Especially if no actual attempt was made which could be construed as rendering aid to a person in dire need.

You're absolutely right. Of course this rule only applies to genuine democracies under the rule of law who hold human rights in the highest respect. In dictatorships where human rights mean nothing prosecuting individuals for thought-crimes is as common as water falling from the sky.

Years ago in New Orleans, a friend, in a session with a therapist, answered that she had considered suicide. She had honestly replied to what she thought was a basic question, though her meaning was that in the past, she had contemplated the idea. She was not suicidal at the time, and the therapist knew her. Immediate action was taken and before she even could process what was happening, my friend found herself in a mental hospital. This was in the 90s, and I don't recall the details, but my friend was spirited away, to the mental ward. She was the daughter of a psychiatrist, she'd spent most of her life in therapy, and she understood that she was in danger of losing her freedom and she needed to keep her cool and speak carefully and thoughtfully. That is what she did, and after a few hours, she was released. I think this Columbia Protocol business is perhaps well-meant, and I don't really know what the definition of "Escort" here is, at least not legally. It seems simplistic to an extreme, but the Dept. of Defense funded the study, and a neurosurgeon and two others on the program were all for it and deeply enthusiastic about seeing this measure put into place. I was stunned, imagining the approach of a neighbor who is putting on glasses to read this card and ask me questions. I didn't know whether to laugh or be horrified.

If you know anything about government funded, DOD psych research this should scare the fuck out of you. They don't do any psych research intended to help people. This came from the same sector that spawned MK Ultra and The GITMO torture program. If anything, it's probably intended to push depressed ppl over the edge to ctb.
