Recently i became obsessed with lottery. I've been playing 50/50 raffle at local hospital for 3 months now, one draw every month. I know it's stupidity and I'm playing losing game, waste of time and money but it's giving me some kind of false hope. I don't know if I should stop and be realistic or continuing this madness

I went through a phase like this. The lottery here tends to give a lot of people really small wins ($10 or so) which makes it all the more addictive.

Unlikely as it may be, a major win combined with being very smart would enable most people with suicidal ideation to recover. It's possible to attract a genuinely loving partner, move to a lovely place with a caring community, get the best of therapies and escape the drudgery of unpleasant work environments.

In practice, though, most people are not so smart. They cop a lot of jealousy, or attract very dubious people. In the end, they often say that their life would have been far better if they had never won the lottery.

The lottery is another of the gov inventions to play with people illusions. I once won about $120 and played for years.

Once I got 8 euros and I was very excited, I bought a box of cookies, a drawing block, graphite pencils of different hardnesses, an eraser and I think a bag of chocolate filled muffins to eat between my mother and me... but it's been many years since then, I do not play regularly because I do not like that I do not touch anything.

I won 5$, scratch-off card. Never played since to keep the win/loss ratio positive, hah. I find it's a waste of money. I'd rather buy a coke or something.

I won $23 last week, but that was from a $28 investment, so I'm $5 out-of-pocket.

I also won four free lines for the next draw, but once they fail to win anything I will be deleting my account, as it's a mug's game really.

To win the major mega-prize, you have to get all 8 balls correct out of 40 in the draw ...

Superficially, that doesn't look too difficult really, but of course there are 32 balls that you don't want, and if just one of those gets drawn you're instantly out of contention for the major prize.

So in practice, out of 18 lines that I buy, there's usually only one or two lines still in with a chance after the very first ball has been drawn! And those one or two lines are usually knocked out by the second ball.

Some lucky sod won $24 million last week, for just a $5 investment - I can't help feeling pissed off about that. Still, I console myself with the knowledge that a win wouldn't save me from inevitable suffering and death, the most it could ever do is just kick the can down the road.

I'm more impressed you could get all that for 8 euros...

I won $2 years ago and I did buy powerball tickets when it was up to 1billion+, just on the off chance I hit. Other than that I don't play.

Was able to pay if their debts and replacing their broken down car so came at the right time for them

Probably if you didn't know or like the person. Someone you cared for dying and leaving money isn't usually a "whoohooo" moment for me.
Yeah nothing to celebrate. But my mother was very old and decided it was time. She refused to eat while in hospice. And my father in law spent some difficult years after a major stroke. So both deaths were merciful endings.

The main problem is that you're screwed and you're not going to relish it. Those who win the lottery and have health and the will to live i guess they are lucky

Rather win the genetic/biological lottery than the monetary lottery as genetics/biology can't be earned while money can. But no, I never won either kind of lottery.

But it gives me security, paid for my kids' college loans, and money we placed in a trust for the kids.

Can't say I'm obsessed however, I have begun playing the lottery too. Most I've won is $500 USD. Kind of scary you said it too but, I'm also feeling a false sense of hope when I do play it. Maybe that's why lotteries earn so much money, peddling false hope.

Oh yes. I'm an eccentric millionaire. But money can't buy happiness and all my win has done is remind me of how empty and meaningless our existence truly is. Either that or I'm lying.
