I don't think it's okay to push religion on people with mental illness.

Brought to the emergency room after an attempt, bruised and bleeding from a few cuts. Later found out I had fractured vertebrae. Sat there bleeding for maybe 10 minutes. Nurse comes in, I have dried blood covering my face. Still had my phone and was messaging people in a bit of a haze. He starts talking about religion, I don't remember much about what he specifically was trying to preach. I tried to ignore him and go on my phone. Then he starts stitching me up and started preaching harder. Saying stuff like "you shouldn't have survived that, but it was gods grace". Goes on for a while longer. Then I get taken out to go to the ward. It wasn't the absolute worst thing ever but. Being an ER nurse, he probably was doing that to every patient that he saw. Maybe he just did it to suicidal people who knows. To me that's pretty messed up. I know he probably is thinking he's being nice to share god with people but, that's not appropriate to do at all.

Even for people who are not vulnerable there is an opposite reaction to being "pushed".

Dick Gregory had a great comment once about politics. He said that the US should not go around the world pushing democracy on everyone. If you have a good idea, people will steal it.

Happens all the time to me. The people doing it genuinely think they are helping, sadly I have little energy to debate the subject. One day I asked how comes all the miracles are only in the bible and not in the real world? Shouldn't priests and the prayerful be camping in hospitals to save the people in pain?

I don't think it's okay to push religion on people with mental illness.

Those who push religion on people who have a mental illness are usually severely mentally ill, so we must forgive them.

Having a dad who's an elder at a church, even to this day he tries to save the black sheep, me. I became the opposite of everything the church taught me.

Why would it be ok to push anything on people? Let alone when they are particularily vulnerable?

Has not happened to me yet, but then, I tend to suffer in silence (unless I am venting anonymously on SS ), so very few people would have had the chance to know enough about my weakness to abuse it.

I'm not a religious man but visit religious places occasionally. During my depressive episodes I've had people (including my friend) tell me that I had no right to commit suicide as my life was not supposedly mine but determined by God and that I would suffer if I committed suicide. All that, of course, is their religious indoctrination.

I firmly believe one's life is one's own and that everyone has the right to have a peaceful and dignified death at a time of one's own choosing.

Not really, I wade through the unsubstantiated garbage by my own volition. Since I am too open-minded/naïve/autistic/have no direction, I have a tendency to get fooled and indoctrinated (to some extent). I remember writing that "memories aren't stored in the brain" on this forum, so there ya go. The "evidence" for this was that some really distant memories that I (supposedly) hadn't remembered for years, and had "no reason" to remember, popped up during meditation. Definitely one of the worst parts of my personality, and it could easily become a real problem.

it happened to me when I was a teenager. I think I was 13 or 14. I won't get into the details, but I was brainwashed.

I dealt with the nonsense when I was around 27 and became true to myself. Some people thought I lost my mind, others fought with me or blocked me.

Well, life goes on.

Religious people love to push their bs on to the vulnerable and the infirm. They are less likely to provide assertive resistance.

I don't advertise myself as being vulnerable or suicidal (which are two different things) and haven't had had anyone push any religion onto me.

Then again I don't think there are a lot of religious people left where I live. Churches remain mostly empty and priests have become a rare commodity that needs to be shared between multiple parishes.

I even used to have a colleague at work who was a practicing Jehovah Witness who never even talked about his religion unless I asked about it. Considering their reputation for being pushy missionaries, I considered it rather anti climactic.

First I thought no. But now I remember some things.
I was alone in the city during a break at school. Someone with an American accent asked how I am doing or something like that. First I thought they need help and want to know where they have to go to. I think then they suddenly talked about Jesus. I cannot remember the exact wording. Maybe they also mentioned their cult/sect. I just laughed in their face and shaked my head. Fuck you just want my money.I did not say that. Yeah they try to take advantage of lonely people.

Another time my grandmother told me something like I should not ctb otherwise I might end up in hell. She did not take advantage of me. But I hate to scare suicidal people with such tricks.

I'm glad I didn't show up at their funeral. I won't ever forgive them for the stupid s**t they said.

Oh yeah, I believe it is very much OK to "push religion on mentally ill people". Don't you see how tendentious this question is?
