How do you ensure that the rope won't break?

The last thing I want is for the rope to break, and to be unable to rehang myself due to unconsciousness. Then I'd probably end up living with brain damage.

Get a rope that will hold at least twice your weight.

Whatever rope you decide, I'd suggest the THICKER the better. Thin rope will cut into your neck and be very painful, especially the shitty yellow nylon rope, this is first hand experience. You want something on the softer side (leather is good, its why a lot of ppl have used belts) and with a larger surface area to go along your neck.

Is it ok if I use cotton rope? The kind that resembles climbing rope, but around 50-60 mm thick

Double braided nylon is smooth and supple.

Even though cotton is softer. And that's the rope I got originally. It has too much stretch, too much give. So, you always end up with more slack than you want. I read somewhere that in capital punishment they use cotton rope, but they boil it before hand to remove the elasticity of it from what it sounded like. I would think it's less of a bigger deal when you do long drop. But for something like a short drop, static climbing rope seems like the best thing. And plus, easier to calculate distance since theirs little to no give to the rope.
