Just don't ask if it is strong enough to hold your weight.

It's a method I'd consider but I worry I wouldn't do it right and end up with a rope mark/bruises round my neck. Which is very obvious what you were doing!

Rope is always good to have on hand. Bought mine a few years ago and still waiting for the right time to use it.
Unless you appear distraught probably they will not suspect the intended use.
