I started playing WoW again recently. You could say I relapsed. I've quit it like three times before since it was all I thought about. Now I felt I could manage it a little better, but I keep spending my days playing it.

I don't know what to think. It's all or nothing for me – if WoW makes me happy, why stay away?

Do you have similar experiences with games? Has quitting helped you or have you kept playing?

I'm in the same situation you're in. I'll play league all day whenever I have free time until I'm tired enough to lay in bed, and then I'll watch videos/streams abt league till I fall asleep. Fuck, some nights I even dream about league. It's like this everyday on repeat. I honestly haven't even attempted to quit nor reduce the amount of hours I play. It makes me happy playing it, whether I'm winning or losing. It's such a great escape and takes my mind off the suicidal thoughts. When I play I genuinely feel content with life. If you can still manage to be somewhat productive (go to work, complete school assignments, not become a total shut in) I'd say do whatever makes you happy.

I've played WoW off and on since it's release. The one I really get addicted to is EQ2. I've played that also off and on since release. More on than off. If it makes you happy and you enjoy it- play it. I have no social life so for me my eq2 raiding guild I have social contact through discord chatting. It also helps take my mind off things when I am questing or going through new content

I was addicted to Runescape, the old version when I was 13. Only for six months but it really fucked up my life. It was crack to me. Antidepressants, like SSRIs can help gaming addiction. I kind of wish I could enjoy something now enough to be addicted. I'm bored.

I was also addicted to video games, but ever since I sold my PC I had no choice but to quit. I used to feel like I was getting dumber every day when playing video games, so I started to play chess, go, or shogi instead when I feel bored and like to compete. I say it's an improvement.

My gaming addiction used to be somewhat similar to a crack addiction.

I never opened my curtains, would be online all day and all night.

Now, i play once every few days and i don't see pokemon or COD soldiers sitting at the bottom of my bed looking at me any more.

I am trapped in the grips of Star Trek Online at the moment! I don't even like it very much, but I've played it for years and it's comfortable like an old blanket.

If I could do nothing but play the SNES for the rest of my life and never have to face reality then I probably would. Meals served, nothing else mattering. Bliss

but isnt that a good thing? u are able to distract yourself and pass the time. thats a blessing. many depressed people, and we have so many here, suffer anhedonia and are incapable of finding fun anywhere. thats hellish

I recently started playing Detroit Become Human again and well... It helped a little with the mood.
IDK, gaming has been lacking in terms of meaning to me lately a lot, considering I used to be a huge gamer.
But the last couple of weeks, it seems to be helping again.

I dont believe its a game addiction more than a coopism mechanism for me, playing allow my brain to stop thinking, most of the time at least.

you're right there. When I'm on some mission in eq2 my mind is on what I am doing and less in pain over my son.

OOh EQ2, didnt know it was still around.
That probably why most of us are either playing lots of game, or watching a lots of movie, anime etc ....
I truly think that i would have wanted to die sooner if game didn't help me to keep my brain in check.

if you have an eq2 account- and want to try it again pm me. I'll hook ya up with some plat and a pl on my server. It is still around and my server anyway is pretty active. Pantheon is the game a lot are waiting for. I think many are sticking it out in wow and eq2 until it comes out.

As mentioned here I'm 48- I got my mom wow for xmas gosh dont even know how long ago it had been out maybe a yr. Anyway I got her addicted to it lol I'll have to ask her but she joined some sort of wow that wasn't from blizzard. It was all vanilla wow and apparently the community was awesome. Eq2 is now free- you can't play current expac but the one prior. As a free to play you cant use insta mail or broker- you have to physically go to a mail box or the broker. So you can play for free.

I'll ask her- she is a space case so she might need a couple of days to figure it out. yes it was some type of private server. It was all vanilla wow. I can't remember how long ago she was playing it, not sure it's even available anymore. Yeah there aren't many hard restrictions for free to play. I have a few toons that could go through old content with you. Heck maybe we get some gamers from SS to join eq2 and we all make a group=) I can get ANYONE into the guild I am in. They welcome everyone.

Two sayings, First, all things in moderation.
Second, practice what you preach.

I'll start with the second saying, I spend way too much time on line. Clearly, it's a dysfunction for me, although I like to get some benefit out of my time, so I spend lots of time reading about how to better help myself from a physical and psychological perspective

Next, about moderation, I doubt that scientists have fully figured out exactly what has been unleashed with the Internet, in general; I know this - the technology companies have figured out how to manipulate us, so that we will spend plenty of time on line.

I saw something from a senior executive from Facebook (?) who stated after leaving the company something along the lines of "we had no idea what we invented with the "like buton" but once we figured it out that this button manipulated people to serve our needs, we cashed in on it." We are all being manipulated.

Scientists are thinking that on line activities are pumping out dopamine, the same neuro chemical realized from drugs like cocaine for instance.

For myself, I'm convinced that I am self medicating with all my time on line.

Now, at the risk of being a hypocrite, try and set up a set time every day where you allow yourself to play - one hour, two hours, whatever. And, stick to it. Maybe, use a timer every day so when the timer goes off you immediately stop playing, even if you are ten minutes from breaking your all time score......just stop

Don't deprive yourself completely since you enjoy it.

Gaming is one of the few things that makes me happy. Sadly, I've not been able to enjoy playing any games lately. (Lack of energy, pleasure, etc.)
