Since I've decided to CTB I've been thinking a lot about the impact on my family. Today I decided to research the financial aspect of it, especially as I live abroad. I found out today that when I CTB my family will have to pay up to €10,000 to bring me home. Does anyone know of any way I could lessen the cost for them somewhat? I unfortunately don't have any money of my own I could contribute towards it.

You could go home ? That's literally the only way it would be affordable.

I've been thinking about that but how would I get the SN through the airport? I certainly couldn't have it delivered to my parents address either but maybe there's another option. Where I am now I have the freedom to CTB whenever I'm able to, but back home I don't have a lot of freedom.

And that's the choice you have to make , either ctb away from home or go back home and find a way to ctb .
As much as it might impact your family either way ...

I'm also living abroad and contacted a local funeral/legal office who assist expats. However, I don't need or want my body repatriated, just a local cremation and scattering of ashes with no ceremony. Most importantly, as I understand, is your Will, instructions as to your remains and contact details of the next of kin/heirs. The firm will help with paperwork, arrangements, contact with embassies, and also offer a translation service for documents needed. I will not be returning to my country and, like you, have SN where I live. I'm planning to get this sorted locally with the least amount of hassles and money as possible, e.g., even choosing the cheapest urn is an option.

Hope this is somewhat helpful to you and your situation. You could also look into travel insurance policies which may include repatriation costs. Wishing you all the best.
