I've been surprised that some people have been found by emergency services, because one time I was lost and had to phone them and they couldn't locate me. Do you know what factors would affect whether or not they can locate you? I'm surprised you could phone them mid attempt in a groggy state and have them turn up.

They can often time trace where the phone call comes from. So even if you call and pass out they'll send someone.
