Not all of the time, but I have observed some instances where people seem to be "competing" over who is more depressed or suicidal.
Not always directly but when one reads between the lines, some are more blatant.
I may have contributed to such behavior at times be it sub-consciously or even consciously and for that I apologize.
Please be understanding of super bored people lol
They / we / I, are just seeking for any form of stimuli to prevent us from smearing fecal matter on our own four walls.
There may be other reasons for such behavior such as sociopathy.
So be careful who you trust and take what you read with a grain of salt.

It's just humans humaning tbh. People want to feel validated and the seemingly out of place competition is part of that. We're also largely used to having to justify our problems being 'bad enough' to deserve attention. It probably helps people cope with their feelings to some extent as well. Competing is deeply ingrained into people so I'd be more surprised it if was absent here.

I also agree with @SmellyRat, sadly its part of our human nature/ego. I'm pretty sure that without it, we would have more peace on earth/between nations..

I had a period when I chain smoked all day and did absolutely nothing at all (no reading, music, movies, chatting with people online or IRL). It lasted a few months. Beat that mofos!
I'm a bigger asshole.
No, I am.

It happens naturally when we we're trying to relate something with the person. It ends up as us one-upping another's issues.

I've spent hours days weeks and months listening to people's problems as an empath but let me say one sentence about what I've been going through and it's "why is everything with you a competition?" :ahhha:
