Concerned that my device has been hacked and that embarrassing content has been obtained. If there wasn't enough reasons to ctb, now there is this. Has anything like this happened to anyone else? I feel so stupid for ever using any of my electronic devices in this way. I have a bunch of issues and I feel like the most embarrassing of these have been captured in someway by my devices. A certain level of privacy would be nice while I try to explore all of the freaky things about myself, but I feel like that boundary has most certainly been crossed and I don't even know what this person would do with this content. It may be time to finally exit this world after all.

First take a moment to take a deep breath. How do you feel like you were hacked?

I have neighbor who is a programming wizard and apparently lacks any morals when respecting other people's privacy.

Did you notice strange activity or something? I'd change all of your passwords regardless.

Yeah definitely change your passwords, maybe make a new email as well. Depending on what they hacked you could talk to your bank also and get cards frozen.

I would change my passwords, but I feel like the damage has been done. I'm also not certain that changing passwords would deter him in the least, he's that advanced. He basically works for a company that is involved in devices accessing and using the internet.

I have been noticing odd activity, but he has also been laughing and mocking me in public. Whispering to his girlfriend and then laughing and staring.

He may be an amoral programming wizard but how likely is he to target you? Unless he dislikes you for some reason or you're rich enough to blackmail, I'm not sure I'd be too worried. Do you have any evidence that you've been hacked, other than the fact he has the ability to do so?

No, I don't have any direct evidence that I've been hacked, but I'm quite convinced that this is the case. He does seem to have some odd issue with me but I also think he's doing it for fun. It's my fault for using my device for embarrassing shit, although I'm sure I'm not the only one. My major concern is that he would have the ability to share photos or videos with who ever he wants just for kicks. I know people probably think I'm paranoid, but there has to be some explanation for his behavior.

I don't know how to scan my device to confirm whether he has hacked it or not, don't really want to pay for it either. I agree that without direct evidence it is an over the top reaction, but I'm upset not knowing one way or the other. I wish I could have the device checked and have some way of knowing it was him specifically and then press charges. The internet is a dangerous place.

For what it is worth, I think you are probably safe. It sounds more like worry because you are not comfortable with what you explore. Also, I feel it is probably not as embarrassing as you think it is.

look, he may have a great technical expertise but he's no wizard. If he had no physical access to your device, there aren't many options to access your data. Most routers by default block Inbound connections, if someone access your online services, you get notified, if someone connects to your LAN, you can see in the logs in the router.

Even if he had access to your device, in order to know you use sme site, he would have to access your browsing history, but it would only give him the fact that you used some sites, he wouldn't know your accounts in the sites.

On top of the recommendations the others already said, I will add that you should look at your dns server in your router to see if it points to a known public server or to your ISP.

It appears to point to my isp. Easy to be afraid of something you don't understand. I don't know what he or other hackers are capable of.

check the list of lan clients as well, and see if it matches your connected devices.
If your router has the option to turn on statistics, you can disable dhcp, give static ips to all your devices and routinely monitor the statistics to see if any other device has connected during that time.

It's good to care about your security, but there's no need to be paranoid :)

I installed net analyzer app and when I checked lan it appears to be only my devices connected, but I will routinely monitor for sure.

I can't figure out how to access my router logs, etc.

well, it's hard to explain because different routers have different interfaces and ways to access each feature, you would have to search how to do it for your specific model, and the logs contain too much information, you would have to filter for the relevant events.

Since if you're using net analyzer, you can make a lan scan every now and then.

Just turned on the desktop and realized that there is an unknown device connected when checking lan. Holy shit! Now what?
Nevermind it's my router

What's going on there? Is he harassing you? Or just with his gf?

It is highly unlikely, though not impossible, for a person to hack into your home network and search all your devices/content , and .. then laugh at you? I'm not questioning what you feel and maybe it's worth a check, but I wouldn't act based on that. I don't understand what sort of suspicious activity you have seen. 'Unknown devices' are everywhere and not indicative.

Turn off all apps programs . Then i would use Wireshark .Filter for any outbound connections. Then check each ip that your device is communicating with as an outbound connection .See if that is a legit device or website.

I'm not a computer expert, but I am when it comes to psychology. If I had to bet, I'd put money on you suffering from paranoia rather than the neighbour having hacked you. Your description of his 'behaviour' above sounds like an example of this kind of distorted thinking.

Nonetheless, it is good practice for everyone, especially those who access embarrassing content, to take basic security and privacy precautions. In addition to the good suggestions from others, I would strongly recommend enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) for all of your services which allow it, preferably using an authenticator app rather than text message if possible.

Trust me hacking is not that easy even if you are a programmer, before I worked for time Warner cable which is now charter spectrum and we can login to routers and also movies on demand page with out customers notice but we would never do that because everything is tracked. Unless he sent you a link some what suspesios link which starts with http rather than https and after clicking such links and installing some apps. It will install a app on your phone and you will not know. So my advice is do a full phone wipe(factory reset) and use. All will be good.
