I was driving along a country road at night, and noticed something moving on the road as I drove past.
I thought it was a plastic bag rippling in the wind.
However, I was unsure, so decided to turn around to go and see.
Turned out it was a dying rabbit, half run over, twitching and periodically moving its front paw and head, breathing heavily with blood in its mouth.

I didn't know what to do, so went over to try and comfort it, but I became upset because it was obviously suffering badly.
I went back to the car to try to find a blanket or something, and luckily I found a towel.
When I went back to the rabbit, it had more or less stopped moving, and it was barely breathing.
So I placed the towel over its body, and it died.

The other day I witnessed a car actually running over a live partridge sitting on the road, which subsequently tried to fly away with the side that wasn't crushed, but all it could do was move in small circles. Heartbreaking.
I think the universe is trying to tell me something.
This reality is so awful, we're basically in hell and there is no God.
I'm so tired of all this.

And if the world is hell, then humans are devils and animals are suffering souls - like Schopenhauer said...

I see dead animals on the road all the time. All consequences of we humans wanting to interfere too much with the environment; who do we think we are to create paths through animal homes so that we can pass through inside our high speed heavy machines?

I sometimes go on walks and one time I saw a deer, the next day I saw what I assume was the same deer (it was very close to where I saw it the day before), but this time it was dead in the street gutter. Made me think about life and death a little. Rest in peace buddy.

At least they are no longer suffering.
They've probably suffered enough.

Life is cruel, in a sense that you have to be at the right place at the right time, have the right mindset and do the things you think is best for you.

it's rather demanding.

That's so sad to hear. I'm sorry you experienced those upsetting events.

I get upset when I see hurt animals too. I will always help any animal the best I can.

But please don't go thinking that the universe is trying to tell you something, or that the world is just a cruel place. Sometimes I think the same way, and think that humans are just cruel and destructive.

But other times I see beautiful moments where humans have rescued and saved animals. I saw a video of people rescuing a shark which had got washed onto the beach and was stranded.

Those people were kind, caring souls. And it was amazing seeing them take the shark back into the sea.

People like that are a credit to this world. And the fact that you tried your very best to comfort and help that rabbit shows how kind and considerate you are too.

We elevate 'the natural world' to some kind of mythological idyllic status, as if we are in some way separate from it. Nothing could be further than the truth. Things die horrifically, usually eaten of frozen or starved through hibernation (which incidentally, for many animals isn't spent completely asleep). We isolate ourselves from it and some of us think we are above it, but really we are right in there.
The kindest thing you could have done is probably to brain the poor creature, but I realise how hard that is - I might not have been able to do that. That you tried to help, even if it was no use, shows a kindness that is a noble thing.
