My body gets super wonky if I don't eat sugar for many days. Tremors, blood pressure tanking, etc. Not diabetic or anything. I personally dislike sugary foods and tend to go the sugar-free route often.

yesyesyesyes. Diet makes a HUGE difference. Low sugar, whole foods, less industrial processed foods- all this is key to recovery. Sugar is genuinely poison I've seen it ruin lives. Our bodies are not made to process so much of it. I think the daily rec is like less than 10g by WHO. One yogurt cup usually has over 20g, soda has over 40g per can. lol its vile.

On the note of desserts- I am a baker and people LOVE what I make. I've never baked a cake and had last 2 days. And I always use less than a 1/3 of the sugar any recipe recommends. I eat desserts every day but dessert does not have to mean high sugar. Not trying to brag but just saying that good food does not require compromising health.

how long did it take to take effect? i guess it's subtile and coming slowly but maybe you can make an estimate.
i did use sugar only for my morning tea but stopped some days ago and start now my day with self made fresh juices.

Sugar definitely worsens my depression. Some sugar is fine, but a lot of it on a daily basis no doubt has an affect on me.

I've been (almost) completely off carbs for 6 months now. Inflammation issue...
My depression got better for the first few months. Obviously, this has to do with the fact I was very motivated to achieve a new goal. But also, you do kinda feel more focused when in prolonged ketosis. And I liked that. Then there's also the whole physical aspect. Inflamation stops hurting, no more gut issues, on the clock bowel movements, insomnia under control, and a miracle in its own right - no more shaky hands. This was a lifelong curse of mine and I'm still in disbelief (it's not surprising though, since the diet is so effective at treating epilepsy).
The problem is, once you get used to the benefits and they become normal, once motivation turns to routine, all your old problems just resurface from the shadows.

So now, I can focus more clearly on how shitty my life is.

I beg to differ, but I must have my wires crossed on this like I have with anything else. I've been almost completely sugar-free for about two years due to being diagnosed with diabetes and my mood worsened severely. The few times I did have sugar I actually felt a lot better though I could see my physical health getting worse if I ate more. Either way it seems as though my mental state can only be improved by sugar since I've been pretty cranky without it.

Thanks for posting! I should try it. I've been so depressed I haven't really looked at what I eat. I do know that after becoming vegetarian I've felt better, but now I've been slipping and eating fish and milk and yogurt a lot.

@Chupacabra 44 you may appreciate this, idk.

I didn't notice a difference cutting out sugar, but it seems like adjusting one's diet helps a lot of people. Your gut is more important than you may think.

Sugar causes widespread inflammation in the body and brain fog in a lot of us. Junk food does too, pizza, fast food, processed food, food that comes in a box or a package, is not the kind of fuel your brain needs to function. If nothing else, try eliminating sugar and be aware all fast food has sugar including most of the things you get there. It's in just about everything.

I noticed the improvement gradually after a couple of months.

My brother took up the carnivore diet. He says he now suffers from fewer panic attacks. Either Jordan Peterson or his daughter, neither of whom I'm a fan of but my brother is, adopted the diet and reported an improvement in their depression.

I suppose it's possible that the elimination of sugar might improve mood.

I'm addicted to sugar. I would like to stop but it's all I have left as far as addictions go. I was using artificial sweetener to help with my sweet tooth but it wasn't the same.

Depression is much deeper than your diet. a lot of people eat healthy and organic all the time but still have a lot of mental issues. like a lot of celebrities. yeah the health problems that sugar gives you suck , it can affect your gut bacteria which affects your brain activity, it can affect your appreciate negatively which also leads to more issues but getting rid of it can't cure your depression or prevent it necessary. depression, anxiety and a lot of issues that we view it as a characteristic problem since it's affecting a lot of people so it's not out of ordinary isn't really on you. if your family have history of these problems there's very little you can do to help it. Geans are the leading cause. it affects you since your childhood and you don't even notice it untill you socialize more and more and realized something is different or wrong with you , you mimic fitting in so no one notices just like an alien coloned in human body , you feel it but don't show it. you could fix imbalanced brain chemicals with meds but still it doesn't help a lot of people at all. a lot of people suffer with different brain shape, biochemical lags that's when you can't change it. it could be so tiny that even a scan won't show it but enough to turn your life upside down. Scientists know this but they can't and don't bother to do more research about since they can't really do anything about it. You can't cut your brain half open and have a surgery to change something so out of sight , something unchangeable. there's a lot of eassays about it on the internet which leads you to nothing in the end

I kinda want to try reducing the amount of sugar in my diet, but I'm currently having a problem with icecream. It became a comfort food for me, so I'm sometimes replacing some of my meals with it, not intentionally.

Depression is caused by a near infinite number of factors. For some it is one hundred percent diet related and it is diet related for multiple reasons. Some of these reasons include, but not limited to, poor nutrition, gut flora, genetic factors affecting absorption, storage, utilization and conversion of needed vitamin/minerals/amino acids/etc and for some indirect reasons that I am briefly touch on later. For others depression is caused by environmental reasons, trauma, being mentally idle, chemical imbalances, lack of support, loneliness, lack of exercise, various mental illnesses, genetic disposition, and many more too numerous to mention. Then you have the combination of these near infinite factors working together where any by themselves would not had affected the individual as greatly. It isn't a simple topic in the least and would take many books to fully explore just a small fraction of it. This is also partly why advancements here are slow. Even with some of the drugs that do work for a certain percentage of the population it is unknown why, only hypothesized.

We have to understand how uniquely different each of us are on many levels and how tackling this issue must be custom to the individual and not generic to the crowd. With that said what works for you, or didn't work for you, in no way determines what it will do for others. Even with that, what you thought did or didn't work for you may not be an accurate assessment on your part as some other variable you are not thinking about took place around the same time period. Once again, complexity here is through the roof, if one is to responsibility access the data.

But let us explore an indirect way diet affects current depression, potential future worsening of depression and future causes of depression. This is what most overlook as we all tend to think in the short term. Indirect comes from damage caused by a poor diet overtime. A poor, or inefficient diet for you, may weaken your immune system allowing a current condition to worsen or allow a later infection to damage you. Your diet may cause the damaging of your teeth over time far quicker than normal. These are simple examples but hopefully it shows how diet affects depression in the long run. This is also how depression can perpetuate itself.

On the topic of sugar, keep in mind that not all sugars are the same in how they are processed by the body, where they are stored in the body and how they affect the body. Then you must consider that products containing various forms of sugar also often contain other additives which in themselves may be causing issues with you. Fructose as an example is process by and stored only in the liver, which has limited compacity, while glucose will be stored all throughout the body. High fructose corn syrup in still used in some products and you have additives like Carrageenan that is used as a thickening agent in some sweet products, among others, that data shows possible negatives with consuming. Once again it isn't as simple as I eat or don't eat sugar. What kind of sugar and what were the other ingredients?

In short, life is complicated. Do consider eating as well as you can. The odds are far greater in your favor of a benefit now and in the long run by doing so. With that, to clarify for the sticklers out there, it is your choice. I am not a doctor but instead a professional online idiot so only use my words as inspiration to do your own thorough research or consult a professional. I am too tired to proofread the above so hopefully mistakes are at a minimum. DM me or tag me in a way that gets an alert if I need to respond to something. I almost never revisit threads.

Bumping this because I think a little evaluation of our nutrition is a useful experiment if you're trying to improve your mental or physical state. If anyone is interested, I just began a new thread on eating better in the Recovery section and a few people have already shared some fine meal recipe ideas. Check it out if you're interested in making a change. :)

there's a ton of solid literature on the relationship between gut health and mood disorders. From what I've read, I don't think it's one-size-fits-all — sugar might be terrible for some, fine for others… likewise other carbs, gluten, dairy, whatever. There's at least enough solid evidence there to try to work out how you feel after eating certain foods, and trying some dietary experiments to see if that doesn't improve things

There's nothing good about sugar, sugary drinks or sweets containing excessive sugar. Sugar is addictive but very bad for health.

Excess sugar consumption not only leads to diabetes, but the fructose in sugar (& HFCS, honey, brown sugar, jaggery etc.) is a liver toxin. It causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in the long run. Cancer cells feed on sugar. Sugar causes tooth decay.

The only form of sugar that's healthy is the one in whole fruits (not fruit juice). The quantity of natural sugar in whole fruit is balanced by the fibre in whole fruits (meaning one cannot eat too much sugar from fruits), plus the vitamins and minerals in whole fruits is essential for the body.
