I've always wondered this and I'm still deciding if I should leave a note. Would it just make it worse? And what do you even say on a note? I don't want their grief to be any harder than it has to be.

it depends on the effect you want to leave of your death. do you want to be disregarded and moved on from? then i'd recommend leaving no note. if there are things you want to make sure of, like messages you want to give the people after your death, whether it be reassurance or reason, then leave a note.
notes are meant to have meaning.

Being the vegan that I am, it's always been my 'fantasy' that I'll encourage my family to go vegan in my note. I can't handle the evils of the world, but it is my hope that maybe I can improve things somewhat by using my death as a tool.

that's ultimately a very personal thing honestly, like the other two users before me said notes are meant to have meaning, some impact on the readers

As stupid as it sounds, the main thing I would probably write in my note is that my birds go to a loving home. Luckily, they aren't particularly attached to me so most of the trauma for my birds will come from moving to a new place.

Statistically people who do commit don't leave a note at all. ( since a majority of CTBs are a in the moment kinda thing) So I'm gonna follow their lead to increase my odds (:

I don't care to be remembered because I won't even be alive.

I wrote a long ass vulnerable note myself. I explained my entire journey, life philosophy, time spent in isolation, whatever else cause my brain kept nagging me and I was gonna print it, and then pin it on my student dorm wall. But I think I just realized it's kinda meaningless. Others failed you, they didn't do shit to help, at least in my case.

Therefore, why on earth would you need to explain yourself to anyone? They will disregard it anyways, ignore it, not give a shit, misunderstand it, say things like "Oh yeah they were so sick, if only they tried to find help." I cannot imagine a version in which they would deeply understand your reasoning even if you mention it in explicit detail, like what I did in mine.

Also I guess you also can't SEE the results after or be deeply concerned others didn't understand you since like they didn't get it in the first place, they're definitely not gonna do a 180 and put their thinking caps on to start understanding you more deeply after you leave.

But I think what OP mentioned in his case is totally fine though since its a practical request as well to take care of his pet.

Please leave a note. Friend went out without one recently and the lack of closure destroyed everyone. They weren't even sure if it was on purpose or not, likely was based on her mental health but we will never know now. The biggest thing we wished for was just a goodbye, even more than knowing why. Even if you just leave a goodbye, please leave something behind for the people who care about you.

Leave one if you have people you're sad to leave. Gives them something vulnerable of you to keep and give them comfort even if it takes a while to comfort them

i want to tell my girlfriend i love her and she did nothing wrong. im so deeply in love with her and i feel selfish for wanting to die. letting her know in a final note that i love her is the only thing i can do to hopefully make sure she doesnt live with unnecessary guilt over my life.

Personal preference. I thought about it for a while and thought about what I would say. In the end, I realized it was pointless. Why should I explain anything to anyone who "cares."

If they couldn't care enough to listen while I am here, they don't get to know any of my thoughts or feelings before I go.

Let me leave you with the same thing you gave me, nothing.
