I saw a post earlier about music which inspired me to post this lol. My favorite composer is Tchaikovsky, hence my username. I like the late classical period, Paganini, de Beriot. All of the Romantic period, Tchaikovsky Dvorak, (young) Debussy, Chopin, Liszt, Sibelius, Borodin, Rimsky-Korzakov, Glazunov, Gliére, etc. Impressionist Era, Debussy, Satie, Ravel. Contemporary, Ysäye, Prokoviev, Debussy, Ravel, some Shostakovich.

Yea I see the other thread just a step above yours now lol

I'm more likely to recognize the music by familiarizing myself with the pieces themselves, I have always been bad with names/titles when it comes to music, whether modern or classical or anything in between.
I'm not entirely sure as to why, because I'm not that way with other mediums like film, etc.
Probably not the greatest thing for me to neglect the title of their creators but it's become a habit and it makes it more difficult to participate in these types of discussions.
However I'd be glad if anyone posted links or videos of the classical music they enjoy.

I do! But not in any kind of informed and organized manner. I have a six-hour playlist of Mozart that I sometimes listen to while working.

I also LOVE Satie. Again, I'm not knowledgeable, but I return over and over to the particular album of his that I'm familiar with, and the three hour loops of Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes.

[There are others besides these. LOL.]

Interesting to hear about everybody's faves, thanks for sharing, everyone ❤️! I like baroque music. It's cliche but I feel as if my thoughts are becoming organized as I listen to it lol

My favourite is the Chopin Etudes as my mother always used to play them. I later read up on him and learned the true extent of his genius; this has ended up the one thing I can admire about mum. Keep in mind Chopin was a late teenager when he composed the Etudes.

I personally feel that a lot of his ideas were far ahead of their time. Opus 25. no 2 reminds me of the later Russian piece Flight of the Bumblebee, yet was written some 70 years earlier. To my ears, Opus 25 no 9 is somewhat reminiscent of 20th century ragtime.

The ever sweet Opus 25 no. 1 is my numero uno. I can partly play it but struggle with the climactic bit at the end and have been too lazy to practice.
Paul Barton is a self-taught ex-concert pianist from Britain who now lives in Thailand.

Opus 10 no. 4 sends shivers down my spine when played with powerfully voiced machine-gun accuracy like Valentina Lisitsa.

Opus 10 no. 1 was reportedly inspired by Bach's prelude in C, albeit on steroids as interpreted by an energetic teenage prodigy. I can play all the notes but doing so with any speed and accuracy is a very different story. Pianist Seong-Jin Cho is from South Korea and won the prestigious 2015 Chopin International Competition in Warsaw.

I have to throw in Opus 10. no 12. This was originally inspired by Chopin's frustration at Russia's 1831 attack on his beloved Poland. Could anyone have predicted that less than 200 years later, it would turn into a cat video with millions of views?

Yes, also not in a deep knowledgeable way, but I have the classical radio station on in the car, and have several favourites from Satie, Chopin, Beethoven. I find classical music timeless and perhaps less influenced by social factors propping up certain music or artists artificially.

In the strictest sense, not very much. But if you extend it into the 1800s, then yes. I love it.

Yes! Beginner level (or dilettante) is a good way to put it. I "dabble." That's funny that you specifically dislike(?) Mozart. Before I posted, I did notice that he wasn't included in your list of favorites, btw. I had one person tell me he disliked Mozart due to his music being too simplistic and predictable (or something like that). I like it (and have the long play list) because it is compatible with working... like it helps me focus when external noise is annoying/distracting me, and at the same time it doesn't overmuch distract me.

My favourite is the Chopin Etudes as my mother always used to play them. I later read up on him and learned the true extent of his genius; this has ended up the one thing I can admire about mum. Keep in mind Chopin was a late teenager when he composed the Etudes.

Oh yes! I forgot about these. I love these, too. I haven't seen a compiled, long play list, but I'll look. I appreciate the reminder.

I will give it a listen!

Somewhat! I wouldn't consider myself a true fan of classical music, as I only really listen to one composer. I've played classical piano for many years and thus really appreciate a lot of classical though. The composer I absolutely love is Debussy - both listening to his works but especially playing them. I've basically quit playing piano, but when I do play now and then, it's almost just Debussy.

Debussy is lovely! I'm sure the only pieces people recognize are Clair de Lune, Revêrie, and Arabesque no. 1. But my favorites pieces by him are La mer, Violin Sonata, Viola, Harp, and Flute Sonata, and Cello Sonata.

They are all played on piano - I've played them all myself! :) La fille aux cheveux de lin is especially lovely to play just because it's super easy to sight read. I'm currently playing Ballade Slave, if you know that one.

Glad to see another fan here. Not many of us.

Ravel is my favorite composer. Runners-up off the top of my head would be Edward Elgar, Debussy, Chopin, Gustav Holst, Malcolm Arnold, Aaron Copland, John Adams, and Eric Whitacre.

Though I am not generally a huge fan of Stravinsky and really only appreciate his big hits, the finale to The Firebird is perhaps my favorite orchestral piece.

Also not a fan of Mozart. I found his music too repetitive. Bach can be problematic for me for the same reason, but I have gotten much more mileage out of him and even enjoy a lot of his fugues.

i am delighted you are a fan of classical music! My favorite piece by Ravel is Introduction and Allegro For Strings, Clarinet, Harp, and Flute. I also like Antar (After Rimsky-Korzakov)
I am beginning to like Bach a little less, I love his partitas but sometimes the melody has this unfinished feeling. And my favorite piece to play is Salut D'amour on my violin. I also love Elgars Cello Concerto, In fact its my favorite piece of all time. Do you have an opinion on Tchaikovsky?

Like with Stravinsky, I feel like I only have really appreciated his big hits - like 1812 Overture or Symphonies 5 & 6. I have by no means done a deep dive into his work though, despite his reputation. It is something I have been meaning to do, but I unfortunately have not been listening to much classical (or music at all) lately.

Thats completely valid! Tchaikovsky himself was not a big fan of 1812 Overture though.

So I have heard. I don't like it as much as Symphonies 5 & 6, but it's still nice for me. I feel similarly about Bolero, which Ravel himself did not like.

I'm a little late here but wanted to add my comment. I don't listen to it too frequently but think that there is something really special about classical music and love a select few composers. Schnittke's five aphorisms is great.

But yeah I like classical but I can only listen to so much at once. I prefer neo-classical metal
