i was looking into hydrolysis & green burials, trying to figure out how much i'd need to save to help the financial aspect of my death. even if i flinch or change my mind, it's not like it'll go to waste. i don't want or need anything fancy, just put me straight in the ground and then let anybody celebrate however they want. i don't have any grand visions, i just want to be convenient in death as i like to be in life.

have you thought about having a funeral? any final wishes regarding that? i'd love to hear them, i think funerals are neat even if i don't personally have any grand desire for one.

Although I would neither desire nor place importance on having a funeral of my own (I would prefer simply to be left in solitude), I recognize that a funeral is not truly for the deceased. Rather, it exists for those who remain, allowing them a final moment of connection in spirit and an opportunity to grieve and mourn the loss of a friend, relative, or loved one.

In France, the funeral It's mandatory. I wanted to completely erase my existence; I didn't want a grave, but I won't have a choice.

thats very poignant. its true with regards to the actual ritual of a funeral, but what about the more practical aspect of having somebody deal with your body? do you feel the same way?

No, I don't want any of it. I want to be cremated, and I hope as few people as possible will learn of my death. I'm fine with being forgotten.

if you don't want a grave, what would you like to happen to your body? you could be cremated and have your ashes scattered somewhere, no?

is there anything you have in mind for the ashes? when i used to work at a thrift store we were donated urns full of ashes all the time. if i get a water cremation i like to imagine my remains up on somebody's dusty bookshelf or in storage in the basement, out of sight out of mind.

Of course! I want a Catholic Funeral Mass with Masses held in my memory every year on the anniversaries of my birth, baptism, and death. I'd prefer a green burial in a Catholic cemetery, but cremation followed by burial of the ashes in a grave or columbarium at a Catholic cemetery is OK with me. (It would probably be cheaper.) I do want a gravestone. Definitely I want to be remembered by posterity: I want to be admired and prayed for. May God have mercy on my soul! 😇

Don't see the purpose. Simple cremation pre-arranged with a funeral company. Ashes scattered at sea.

that sounds nice! i've not encountered anybody religious on this site, isn't it considered a sin to commit suicide? i'm not knowledgeable on these things, i hope i'm not being rude.

Before colonisation in my culture we would be buried directly in the earth wrapped in blankets. No real funeral. That's what I'd like to happen but that isn't allowed anymore.

any specific reason for being scattered at sea? i wish other body disposal(? i feel like there's a better term) options were as cheap/accessible as cremation

thats sad that it's not allowed anymore. looking things up here, you can be buried in a shroud, but it'll be in the ballpark of $4,500

It's the easiest considering where I live and cheapest from what I could find out. I also don't want a grave site, and love the ocean. I actually asked the funeral company to suggest the cheapest way to "dispose" of ashes (thinking garbage bins). But the response was that they need instructions or wishes to act on. They cannot just "dispose human ashes somewhere" 🤣

Oh yes, the Catholic Church considers suicide to be a sin, but after the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), it realizes that most people who end their lives frequently are not fully responsible for that sin. Mental illness and severe suffering and stress frequently diminish the responsibility of a person who ctbs.

It's mandatory? Are you saying it's just a strong tradition? Or the state mandates that a funeral is had? That'd be crazy if true.

I misinterpreted French law; it is forbidden to keep the ashes of a deceased person at home. The family has one year to decide on their final destination: placement in a columbarium, burial in a grave, or scattering in a memorial garden or in nature, provided that the designated areas are respected. Private gardens, public spaces, and public roads are excluded.

Ultimately, French law requires us to buy a coffin for cremation. So we have to burn the bodies in coffins, which made me think we were obligated to have a grave, lol.

I'd rather people celebrate than hold a funeral after my death. For me, death is a liberation, not a misfortune, but very few people think like me...

No, I just want to be forgotten about like I never suffered in this dreadful, torturous existence at all, all I want is peace from the terrible mistake of existence, if it's up to me I'd erase this existence, I just want to be permanently unconscious with this existence finally all gone and forgotten, I wish for no more pain and no more suffering.

I'm okay with the cheapest option. Don't want to put even more strain on my family. A unmarked grave in a forest sounds nice. My death helping new trees to flourish sounds kinda lovely

I'd prefer nothing. Certainly no grave that's a horrifying thought. Cremation and dump the ashes in the garbage. Just to completely disappear would be amazing.

At the very least, I want the state to show me some basic respect when I'm gone, the respect it doesn't show me and the disabled right now. I've never thought about a funeral, but I want my family to at least be able to say goodbye

sorry to bring that thought up for you, my condolences. your best option would be cremation/hydrolysis, leaves behind a couple pounds of ash & bone fragments ground up, have it scattered somewhere that'll essentially turn to nothing.

i find it interesting that people feel strongly about wanting to truly become nothing, even though by the point that you're dead, your body is nothing but a cicada shell after a molt. i understand not wanting to exist, but my remains mean nothing beyond bringing closure or perhaps being useful in some way- i'll already be gone. i want my consciousness gone, the rest is up to whoever has to deal with it.

I don't care about funerals or cremation, I would prefer cremation if it came down to the two, I don't want people to gather around or leave me superficial and performative flowers after I die. I just want this to be over, that's it.
