Like maybe that you're supposed to die a certain way at a predetermined time.

To me it just feels like we have very little control over our lives. Maybe free will is an illusion or maybe we just don't have that much control over it.

It's just the older you get the more you start to realize how you never really had a choice.
You sit down on a bench in the middle of the city. You see people walk by, cars rushing by and they may even get close to being hit but they don't. You observe them and notice how they all have already determined where they're going and what they're going to do. You notice the invisible force making its way.

That's just how I see it.

What do you think?

you can overthink this shit, like me, until you reach the point you have thought so much about fate that you changed your fate. dunno if that's good or bad :P

If there is a fate then it's not constant so there's no need to care about it. Touch a butterfly and it flies away 2 minutes earlier, a kid sees it and runs on the street, gets driven over. The father of the child is the big boss of a company, causing the company to collapse..causing ppl to lose their job, one of them goes killing ppl for money, the other one gets a drug addict, the third one establishes his own company, maybe it's a good one maybe a bad one, and fate continues...maybe all of this doesn't happen because the child can be saved, so there's gonna be a completely different future.

And if you overthink instead of taking a chance you may change your future to a worse. Or maybe you get the exactly right amount of overthinking and it's better than not thinking at all.

Well, I got lost...I think there's some sort of fate and it's not easy/possible to change it sometimes, or maybe your influence is everything that counts. maybe we have to move our ass, not too fast and not too slow, but we shouldn't overthink that fact or shit/nothing is gonna happen.

Maybe I'm just believing in fate because I'm in love and I won't give up and die :D dont know. yeah.

I don't believe in fate, but I'll explain why. I think we have some free will but much more so if we live in a completely free society. As soon as there are rulers who control the money, education, incentives, opportunities that are available to people, how can anybody say that someone has complete free will to determine the fate of our outcome. I hope I'm making sense. All I'm saying is if u are not free, it's more difficult to control your fate and be self determined in life.

I'm a big fan of Bob Olson on YouTube. And he asked a question once that stuck in my head and it's sorta on the same level as this. He asked to suicide victims change the characters of this guy's life. Which is a great question to ponder. HIs guest said think of it as people are in on big play, they have roles, they all provide some sort of urgency that is connected to the victims life. Now if this person takes their life, everything changes...lives change, people change, roles change, the play changes and so do all the actors in this giant play that we're all in. So someone who takes their life it effects everybody's outcome and therefore makes everything and everyone change and so it changes, for good or for better, maybe even for the worse. But since this individual took their life, were their life going to end anyways? The guest agreed that it did. In some sort of way, some sort of fashion, the individual was going to sooner or later die relatively soon anyways. But ending early, it just changes everything. The whole outcome of every single persons life. Everything got changed.
Thought I'd share that. That's where I'm at with your question @throwaway123

Fate, predetermination...abstract concepts man uses to impose order upon chaos...all we have is the illusion of will and the results of of those things that wield this illusion most effectively

Do you think a "free" society is even possible?

Ever heard of "Black Mirrors"? At the very end of December, they made a playable episode called "Bandersnatch" and it's about making choices for the main character, but the main character starts to realize it's not the choices they want to make. Also has a great theory on what you are saying about no free will. I will quote it for you

  1. "Like Pac-Man. Do you know what PAC stands for? P-A-C: "Program and Control." He's Program and Control Man, the whole things a metaphor, he thinks he's got free will but really he's trapped in a maze, in a system, all he can do is consume, he's pursued by demons that are probably just in his own head, and even if he does manage to escape by slipping out one side of the maze, what happens??? He comes right back in the other side. People think it's a happy game, it's not a happy game, it's a fucking nightmare world and the worst thing is it's real and we live in it. There's a cosmic flowchart that dictates where you can and where you can't go. We're on one path. Right now, me and you. And how one path ends is immaterial. It's how our decisions along that path affect the whole that matters."

No, I do not believe in fate. Nor do I believe in free will as a metaphysical concept. I just see indifferent causality at work limited to understandable forces. There is more comfort in the random-seeming chaos of it all for me. Than thinking any of this is meaningfully orchestrated as that raises so many more horrifying questions. I also don't accept fate as an answer. Especially if it is used as an excuse to deny your capacity to choose. You still have an agency of choice even if those choices are limited or partially predetermined. I can't accept paedophiles and rapists are just victims of fate destined to stick their dick unwanted places...

I think there is fate but only with certain events. A lot of the shit that happens is the result of our actions, free will, but some are built up to and WILL happen.

People greatly underestimate how much your upbringing effects your future (destiny).

Yes we don't have absolute free will but there is a way of living that influences your quality of life to the point where your destiny could have been far more enjoyable.
