It was explained to me once like this. "Heaven" and "Hell" are not places, but states of being. For those who believe in God, heaven would be an eternal post-earthly existence in the presence of God. Hell would be spending eternity in the absence of God.

I'm not sure how that works out, since I can't truly fathom what a state of being after life would actually be. The closest I can imagine is that Heaven would be a peaceful rest, while Hell might be non-existence. If they do exist, I'm not sure human minds would be able to comprehend them anyway.

It seems very unjust to force a life/soul/consciousness into existence without that being's consent only to then doom that being to an eternity of suffering based on how its life unfolded in the surrounding environment.

I like to think death/afterlife is like others who have had NDEs on here say--a dreamless sleep.

You pretty much summed up why, even though I'm sure of few things in life, I am absolutely certain hell doesn't exist. Makes no damn sense punishing people with the worst pain imaginable for all of eternity for breaking a contract they never agreed to. No offense to anyone who does believe in it though.

Whether or not hell exists, I don't think you can go to hell just for suicide like some religions say. I personally believe in a god, and I think it'd be really ridiculous for a god to be dishing out horrible lives to so many people, and expect them not to ctb.

I don't believe in it. I was forced into christian school and all it did was turn me away from religion. I don't believe in god, or heaven so I don't believe in hell....plus if hell exists this is it.
