Solitary confinement is torture regardless of who they are. The keeping alive part probably not which is a bit sick as the state is trying so hard to keep people alive who have done things they probably deserve no life for anyway. -_--_-

If the person is very evil, I think they deserve to suffer. They don't deserve an easy way out.

I just have to say that "evil" is not a word that any real mental expert would ever use, it's a term/concept from theology/religion

I can see why you're angry with them, but I think it's wrong regardless.

If it's a torture, I think there are people who deserve that torture. Rapists, recidivists, cold blooded killers... They ruin lifes for others, they should suffer IMO.

Killing yourself is (or should be) regarded as a personal freedom, cause it's a most private affair. However, murder, rape etc. is not. Invading someone elses' privacy is (and should be) punished by stripping any and every personal freedom. No mercy.

When I tell people morals are subjective to the individual I get dirty looks. "Good" and "evil" are subjective to each person individually.

I think torture is wrong regardless of who they are. I want to end suffering, not cause more. Don't get me wrong, I have little sympathy for someone who I'd call "evil". Still, inflicting pain on anyone for no good reason feels wrong to me.

I'd want to kill them, I believe I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger. But I see no need to make them suffer. I don't see the point in inflicting pain, be it for vengeance or whatever else. I find no joy in seeing anyone suffer. I just want to remove them.

You might argue why killing them is ok but torturing them is not. To that I say, killing removes them and makes the world a better place, making them suffer doesn't help anyone.

They shouldn't be killed, they shouldn't be tortured, they should be put to work

I guess that's one way to get the death penalty overturned. Most people who support it think it's the worst possible punishment that can be enacted even though life in prison sounds way worse. Maybe they totally should start offering the death penalty for lighter sentences as a form of mercy.

The problem with that system is most nations prison populations are innocent, it's actually rare for the police to come across a crime that very obvs said person done it 9 times out if ten it's just some idiot that thought talking to the police was a good idea despite there training being in word play and mental chess

I do. I think that every human being has a right to death, even the bad ones. They aren't entitled to assistance, but if they want to take their own life, who am I to deny them that?

I'm not too worried about the plight of a serial killer, but it does make for an interesting moral and intellectual problem. What utility is there in keeping them alive against their will? I can think of two possible arguments: 1) it is a possible deterrent for other potential killers and 2) as aptly stated in this post:
Having suicide watch on top of a life sentence is stupid and only exists to satisfy the sadistic urges of those writing and administering the punishment. The criminal will never be free so forcing them to live is nothing more than needless torture.
For reason 1, I suspect it wouldn't make any difference, but I'm just guessing. I wonder if there is any good research on that. For reason 2, I don't see how that's helpful, so I am personally against it, but I don't really have a strong opinion on it.
