I think one should not be too surprised. I think it is the inherent logic of the media.
Maybe it is kind of ridiculous how short our attention span is. We are not much more than some apes.
During a certain time period we all focus on one topic. A topic everyone talks about. Everyone has an opinion on. Including me.
Though following something in-depth and over a long time period is way more difficult.
The media is often only superficial and voyeuristic. In order to solve problems genuine interest is necessary. Otherwise we just have some debates that lead to nothing.
It is often bullshit that wastes time and distracts us from our own personal problems. This can help indeed. However one should not confuse it with being an expert on a certain topic. For that the coverage is most often too shallow.
