I don't mean public in the sense that you're surrounded by a crowd, but you're just in a place where people do go.

I saw a news article where a girl jumped recently. She had posted her note on Instagram which got it spread around a bit.

That depends on the public method and on your country. Some countries don't want to "encourage" others by making headlines. In some they try to mask it with certain words/codes (public transport f.e)
So when a girl posts openly about it online with her name attatched it will surely grab some attention. It's free publicity for the newspaper and pretty sick in my opinion

My sense is that they usually try not to discuss suicide in the news at all. May I ask why your interest in the answer? Are you wondering if your own ctb will be covered and is this is a source of concern for you? Or a desire of yours? Or are you perhaps looking into someone who previously ctb, and wondering if you can find info on them?

I don't think so, I rarely see any suicides mentioned in the news

Only suicides I see mentioned but discretely are bridge jumpers who shut down traffic. This only happens in some countries where authorities will shut down an entire bridge to try to coerce a would be jumper down. If you want to make the news, a bridge jump during rush hour may do it, it'll definitely piss off a lot of people depending how busy the bridge is. I've read a few reddit threads about jumpers in my area and people are always salty about the traffic delay, lol fuckem.

And where I live, only train CTB makes the news because people get "annoyed at the inconvenience" in the delay of their commute.

From what I can tell, usually not unless you do it in a really public or disruptive place, you're well known and/or your family choose to go to the media about it.

I noticed that a teen who kills themselves are mentioned in the news often because they were bullied. Usually newsworthy if the person was attractive, academically gifted, or a sports star. Much higher if the person was a female. No one cares if Joe Blow who was lonely all the time killed himself as long as he didn't take out the entire school with him, then that would be news.

People be like, "Well I'm glad he killed himself and not anyone else" to the lonely unpopular kids.

local news its mentioned a lot, normally months later, sometimes closer to the time, I recall a few months back, local headlines were someone had jumped that morning from a multi story car park, yet another recently, a few stories of people who had CTBd, months prioir, but names and info was only recently released, rarely though the method.

I've read local reports of jumpers for the bridge I've chosen. The jumpers are from the area. I wonder if someone like me who lives several hours away would be wrote about differently.

Yea, that got a lot of news. Heartbreaking and tragic. A lot of people cared about her and it was all on social media, and it was at a notable place. So, it's way easier to put on the news.
But as somebody else said, I'll die tomorrow and it's not going to matter to anybody except the person that has to box up my apartment. Sorry to that person, I tried to organize it.

I guess if there's no sensational story behind suicide the media will not be interested.

Suicides are usually reported as "no suspicious circumstances" in the UK.

No. It is because it is extremely violent and traumatic for all involved.

I'm unsure as to why as we didn't give any permission etc it had a lot of social media following and I guess they picked it up from there
He had a lot of social media following?

I'm gonna go with no. There's a huge bridge near me that's fairly popular to jump from time to time. Unless I hate to say it blocking traffic then it's not on the news.

I hope so. If I ever ctb I will try to go out in a spectacular outlandish faction and hope at least my death garners some level of notice

I don't think most suicides make the news, the same way most murders don't make the news, unless there's a compelling narratives humans can latch onto.

There was a story about a woman who jumped off a parking garage after throwing her two children off the edge that became national news, because it was particularly cruel and tragic.

Where I'm from in the UK news like this doesn't make headlines but rather stays in local newspapers/media. Heck they'll post that somebody is stood on a Trainline implying they're causing inconvenience to travelers and apologise for the delays while the negotiators swarm in. Yep.

I think I heard something about this. Was it in NY?
