One of my concerns after I CTB is how to inform the cops and medical services of my death. I'd like to be discovered say max 24hrs after a succesful attempt.

I've been playing with the idea of a small letter with the keys to my appartment and mail it (snailmail) to someone close to me. The message would be something like, "Here's what I've done, there's no risk for emergency services, here's the keys so they don't have to break down the door. Please alert the police and let them discover me."

Once you post that letter, that's it. It is going to be delivered and the person you sent it to will know the depths of your despair. So I was thinking, how about someone calls the cops after a succesful CTB attempt? We might be able to help eachother out, I'd gladly call the cops on their local number to inform them of a local suicide - anonymously though

What are your thoughts or am I just overcomplicating things?

This is why a gun is my main method.

I'll call the cops to tell them I am about to kill myself and then when they just arrive I turn my lights off.

I've thought about delayed messaging services but the crux here is that I want emergency services to find me first, not a friend or a family member. And i'd like to prevent anyone having to break down doors, so they'll need the physical keys. For me it's either that or drive somewhere and CTB out in nature with all the essentials (goodbye notes & practical matters such as keys).

Sounds like a solid plan, seems like a good way to overcome SI as well. Unfortunately firearms are very strictly regulated where I'm from - it would take a lot more effort to get a gun than to get, say, N

PS: Futureme requires a double opt-in, you need to click a link to verify that the destination email address actually belongs to you. It'd be a bit weird to call the cops and ask them to click the confirmation link ;)

I was thinking about this last night. Maybe an autodialer? I haven't done enough research. Mail seems great but i know a lot of people only check for snail mail once a week. Those pesky community boxes make it harder. If you do it registered mail, they have to sign for it so somebody knocks on the door.

Would they really go get the keys though? I think emergency services protocol is to attempt a rescue, as some methods could be survived but leave you unable to call for help. And your friend might try the rescue too, or be instructed to meet the officers at the house with the keys. Increasing the chances of seeing the body.

Yes, fair point, I cannot control who's going to see the body, I'd just really like it not to be someone close to me. Since postal service suck here, if you mail something on a Friday night it'll probably only get delivered on a Monday, being way too late for a possible rescue attempt.

I've been thinking about some autodialing as well - it's just that I know how bureaucratic police can be - say you mail them the letter and keys might take weeks before it's actually being looked at. Same with autodialing - you'll get some receptionist who doesn't understand what's going on. A solution to this would be that you'd provide a fellow SS member with the local cops' phone number and a promise to call them to report a suicide if they haven't heard from you in x hours

Here's my suggestion. Get a spare set of keys made. Give them to a friend or neighbour that you trust. Or in a hidden place by your front door. Then find the email of your local police force and send a delayed email letting them know what has happened and where to find the keys.

Thanks Stan, I might just send them a test email first with some bullshit complaint and see what the actual response time is :)

Let's prevent something like "Oh yeah sorry we found your friend a month after his death, his email didn't get through our spam filter"

With some googling i found email addresses for my local police and fire departments. Plan is to send delayed emails via SendLater plugin for the Thunderbird email client. (Make sure that PC does not go to sleep, hibernate or reboots) Key under door mat.

If attempt is unsuccessful i can stop the process in contrast to a letter.

I think it's very kind of you that you're trying to prevent family and friends from seeing your body, but I believe they will want to anyway. Your body is a very important reminder of you, a symbol of the character that once lived in it. For the grieving process it is important for people that loved you to be able to see your body, to understand that you are really no more. Here at least it is very common that family comes to see you in the funeral home to say goodbye (open casket funerals aren't allowed or trendy anymore). I agree that you need some way for people to be notified, and that it would be good that someone else than family and friends find you, but I think you need to deal with the fact that people will want to see your body to say goodbye.
I'll call for you :)

Thank you for your thoughtful response. My main concern is the bag over my head - don't want a friend or relative seeing me like that - since exit bag is my preferred method. I seriously considered SN as my primary method but after seeing the pictures of corpses turned blue it is now secondary.

Also, I'll arrange and pre-pay my entire funeral in advance, leaving room for loved ones to see the body if they wish to do so.

PS / Edit: some of the funeral services offer a kind of 'cosmetic' service, as in they'll make you look like you were when you were alive. Not too sure about that though, would be worried they would make me into some kind of plastic Ken doll

I don't know which method of CTB you are going to do . Unless it is a Nitrogen/ gas asphyxiation or firearm or fentanyl , it is quite unnecessary to do mailing...

What if your ctb fails , as they find you after noticing the mail and attempt to save you . Don't worry about the door .... Just focus on CTB without becoming a vegetable

My method of choice is nitrogen exit bag. If for some reason the attempt fails (and I come by in my own house / not having been saved) I have SN as an immediate alternative since I'll be doing the meto regime before the exit bag, just in case. I'm convinced that my first attempt will be my final attempt. I've reserved the coming months to get all my affairs in order.

This sounds so strange to me. I worked at a funeral home for a year, saw everything from the embalming to the burial. But literally every single person had their makeup done. Men usually just had hair styled and a bit of foundation or cover-up if there was any darkening of the skin. Most families brought in outfits and a picture of how they looked before. 70% of the funerals had the casket open, and a viewing. The other 30 ether did private viewings or no viewing. And cremation is a majority now instead of burial, but people rent some nice showing caskets.

With SN, i am not sure a cosmetic person could counteract all that blue. I have seen hangings and other face discoloration deaths, those are almost always closed to even the family.

That's some great info you have there, thank you :) It would be good to have my hair styled and have some natural skincolor. Honestly, the way the body looks after CTB is one of my main concerns. I want to give friends & family the impression that my last moments were peaceful and that I wasn't in pain. Also the reason why I could never do a jump for instance.

PS @Wreck-it-Riley why does this sound strange to you?

My mom ctb'd by jumping but my family and I never had to see her afterwards. She had her ID in her purse so no one had to identify her, and because we were abroad and wanted to bring her home, we had to cremate her.

My plan is to leave my identifications beside me when I ctb, lock the door to my room, send scheduled text messages to my family members so they know to call the police to get into the room. I'm hoping they won't have to see me.

I just meant that to my experience, every funeral home has a cosmetic person, and its usual just a free service, they do it on almost everyone. And @noctiva mentioned open casket funerals not being allowed or popular anymore. While again my experience is the direct opposite. I live in a very religious area of Canada, so maybe its just our rigid traditionalism that holds on to the open casket? Other countries might do it different.
