I think most of use have been betrayed/let down/hurt by psychologists and psychiatrists in the past. Recently I opened up to mine and he just told me 'what a waste of a life'. He brushed off my thoughts and didn't take me seriously (he works in many psych hospitals and crisis teams so he's pretty well trained). Of course I'm not asking to be sectioned, but I'd like him to maybe listen to me? Acknowledge my feelings? The next time I saw him he didn't ask once about suicide or depression. He's broken my trust before and this time it really stung. Have you had negative experiences with your psychologist?

Not my psychologist but they referred me to a therapist for CBT, I did a couple of sessions to gauge my mental state. When he found out I had SI he reported me to whoever they report vulnerable people to in the system; you aren't allowed to have SI if you want CBT. I was then promptly removed from the mental health service and left to my own devices, never gone back since. Being honest with healthcare professionals has gotten me nowhere. F*ck you Simon where ever you may be.

I'm sorry to hear your psychologist broke your trust, its sad to say its all too common. I hope you are able to find someone else who can provide better support.

Hi. Yes I have been betrayed by a psychologist a couple of years ago. This person was also connected to the place where I had my psychiatrist. It was all linked. A place in London. I was discharged by a psychiatrist that I didn't know. For a stupid reason. I was ill with chronic insomnia and I missed a couple of psychiatrist appointments. I still had a few appointments with my psychologist so I went to those. Finished all the sessions. It turns out my psychologist was telling the psychiatry team stuff I'd told her in my session, something I didn't want any one to know. I thought for the most part it was confidential. Because she was linked to the psychiatrist team that had discharged me, she still reported back to them. I thought that was a breach of patient/ therapist confidentiality so I told her as much and she said that it was a " grey area"
From then on out I decided never to go to the NHS for mental health ever again. I pay for my counselling privately now. Best decision o ever made. I have a Psychodynamic counsellor now. Much better for me. I pay £80 a month. Even a mental health charity that we have in England has gone down the tubes. I was supposed to be having counselling there ( before I decided to go private) and this mental health charity is sub par. After my initial meeting with them I had to wait 6 month to see someone. I said no thanks.

A psychiatrist I went to briefly told a journalist (her neighbour) my whole situation, and it was printed in some godawful tabloid. They gave me a pseudonym but it was still obviously me.

I called the wrath of the Medical Oversight Committee down on her, but it still pisses me off.

Yep it's absolutely crap. The most stale joke that's ever existed. My last NHS psychiatrist was a zombie, never gone to one since.

It really does suck, we were blessed to have something like the NHS in our country just to have it slowly broken down by you know who. The charities aren't that much better either, I tried one of the popular ones and was never answered. I'm sorry to hear they broke confidentiality. I'm glad to hear that private counseling is working out for you though, may it continue to

Thank you. I do too . You know which mental health charity I'm talking about don't you? Begins with M. They used to be excellent. I went there before, they were great. Then some stuff happened and now they are not so good. At all. Disappointed in them.
Yes we are blessed to have the NHS but something has happened to the mental health side of it. I'm really happy with my private counselling. It has given me more control over who I see and more autonomy too. Have you thought about going private? If you pm me I could give you some resources on private counselling.

M used to be good, but they had financial problems and scaled back. It became a bit too sterile for me. It's a long story. I'm sorry to hear that you can't afford private counselling. I managed to get a discount with my counsellor because I'm on benefits and it is a bit of a pinch. I'm taking a break at the moment because of this virus epidemic but I am going back to counselling at some point. I don't know if a lot of private counsellors do discount but I'm very lucky to have found my counsellor. She is a lovely lady. I've had some good counsellors, some not so good.

Sorry you had this experience. I hear similar issues a lot from people and it really seems absurd that these people here to help you recover can be so cold and dismissive of the sensitive feelings that you've entrusted them with. Hope you're able to work through this or find a different psychiatrist; this is a totally unnecessary obstacle for recovery.

That is extremely inappropriate for a mental health professional to do. Thats the kinda thing that could get someone reported to their licensing board, no one should talk to a client like that.

Are you stuck with him for insurance/healthcare reasons? You might see your condition improve a little if you can find a better therapist who won't belittle you or betray your trust like that. Seriously it's not worth the time or money to keep seeing him if all he's gonna do is treat you poorly. You need someone trustworthy who will make you feel heard and help you tackle your issues.

I met him in a brain injury hospital (got it from my last attempt) so I've known him for most of my new 'life' as I lost almost all my past memory. He's been really helpful in getting me back to uni and many other things, he knows me really well (other then the mental health side, I barely open up to anyone). This is not the first time I've considered getting someone else, but maybe I should give it another go. It's just hard finding someone with that expertise as I'm quite a complicated customer. I've been with him for over two years and barely opened up, I don't think many psychologists are that patient

Jesus, this is disgusting. Not only that your psychiatrist gossiped around with her friends about your personal issues (which should be confidential) like a damn middle-schooler, but then her friend had the nerve to write about it, too in some trash tabloid for clicks. Both of them are garbage.

I don't think I've ever been actively betrayed by a mental health professional, but for several reasons, I would never put full trust in them in the first place - especially in the context of suicide. I would allude to it only vaguely and always stop at the point of mentioning a plan. I knew that at the end of the day, they would shit themselves if their license or career were on the line.

My therapist is a jerk, she's stopped talking to me during the pandemic because the presencial attendances was interrupted and I refused to do virtual attendance for the reason that I have shame of my parents...

Not my psych or anything, a bloody 'help worker' who was supposed to help me out with training/apprenticeships or jobs, I'm very well qualified in IT. She made jokes the whole time and I let slip that if I didn't get benzos prescribed, I might have a seizure and would have to buy them. She wrote down "The patient is planning to sell class A drugs" and sent it to my GP. Needless to say I was immediately cut off all medication, and I did in fact have to buy and continue to buy benzos, even though they were given to me by a GP in the first place. I wouldn't be hooked on them if not, I likely would not be suicidal, that one fuck up has plagued me for 8 years.
edit: oh yeah, the police arrived later that day, confiscated all my benzos and told me to fuck off junkie. Great person that cunt 'help-worker'
