• Hey Guest,

As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.

Right now I'm planning on ending my own life soon. I only have 3.5 months left of unemployment, and I have found nothing. I have over 5 years of IT experience, and I haven't gotten anything in terms of jobs. I can't even go back to doing something like retail or package delivery because I'm "overqualified and won't stick around". My last interview didn't go well because right before the interview, the vet told my mom that one of our cats might need to have its leg amputated due to an infection from cat fight. I also am having a harder and harder time answering tech questions because I haven't worked in 4 months (my last month at my last job, I didn't do anything because my manager let me spend my last month applying for jobs). I'm a pc gamer, but the IT issues I encountered at work are things you can't just learn at home. There's nothing I can do to keep my knowledge up to date. I am in school for computer science. Additionally I'm a trans women, and the Trump admin is passing more and more anti trans laws, there's a coup led by Elon Musk, and the democrats are just shifting further to the right. The bay area (which is supposed to be "progressive"), is embracing fascism against the poor, the city of Fremont is going to criminalize giving food to the homeless. Protests don't do anything because they can't last long enough due to people getting arrested or simply needing to go back to work. If I die than I don't have to live to see fascism anymore and I won't have any bills to pay

I understand you, unemployment is terrible. I've also been through something similar. Would you be able to work as an app driver or something like that? I hope you find something in your area and do well.

Get a home server and cause issues and fix them.

I don't know what IT job you did, but IT is very easy to find ways to practice.

I barely have a high school degree and worked manual labour while studying web dev stuff before and after hours.

Also always lie to employers/on your CV, but do it in a way that you won't be caught.

Just do job interviews for jobs you're not interested in/aren't qualified for. Get good at shutting down HR people. Make the interview into you interviewing them, rather than the other way around.

I have no degrees or qualifications and have worked in multiple fields just by bullshitting. You learn the job on the job anyway. Suck up to the right people, out bluff non technical people and undersell yourself to technical people. Always make sure you get stellar references from them, for when you need to find your next job.

I respect this but in practice it sounds difficult. Any examples you could provide?

Uh, instead of going through the regular application process, message technical people in the company directly on Linkedin before applying.

Abstract whatever work experience you have and reword it so it fits the job requirements.

Things like this.

When I went from manual labour to web dev, I would literally write down whatever I did during the work day. For example telling the team lead of the next part of the production line when our part would be done, I would write something like planning with fellow responsible people to assure workflow is consistent.

Teaching a person to press the right button of a machine => train temp workers to be expert operators.

Stuff like this.

Read the job description, study surface level of it. Pretend to be an expert. Adjust your resume and work experiences to make it fit the the job description. Make good contacts in jobs and look like you know what you are doing. Always do less than you should, so when extra erfort is needed, you can use your free time to be the saviour.

Better to be underestimated and surprise pleasantly, than to always work 100% and then have to do more work than you should.
Empty gaps in CV -> look for companies that went bankrupt in that period and say yo worked there.

Heck yeah, if capitalism is going to manipulate us we might as well manipulate it back. I have a bipolar friend who can't get any job because the second he mentions being bipolar they won't hire him. He is required by law to mention having bipolar. At this point I have been telling him to just lie. Like what the fuck else are you supposed to do in that situation? Not like they would have any way of knowing for certain anyways.

Oh wow, that's so cruel. What country is that? Without any support from the government this is basically asking people to fuck off. There are lots of bipolars which are extremely creative and capable of amazing things.

But yeah, lie is the only defense left in this case.

Don't give up! I have been a hotel receptionist for many years, but in 2020 my hotel closed and I lost my job. From then on I couldn't get another job at the reception desk because they told me they preferred to hire young people under 25 years old. I was born in 1983 and I worked at the same hotel for more than 10 years. When I look for a job in something else, they tell me that they can't give me an opportunity because of my age and because I only have experience as a receptionist. In 2020 I lost everything, the house, the car, the money, the income, the woman of my dreams, my friends... I lost absolutely everything. Now I am in an isolated village in the mountains living with parents who hate me, insult me, despise me, and I have no income. Even so, I don't give up, I keep looking for work of any kind, I am even looking for online work, whatever job. And if I don't get a job I will run away from home to another place far away, I will never give up. You can survive by getting some water, some food and shelter from the cold. And you can also try to start over in a new place. Don't give up, you can survive without money for a few months until you find something new, or a solution. Don't lose your life because this unfair slave system we live in. Look for new cities or diferent countries, different jobs, different places to try to start over.

I never lie and I always tell the truth on my CVs, but the way you speak is inspiring. I don't know if I dare to lie when I'm looking for a job, but your words have impressed and inspired me.

Capitalism is a game with wonky rules. Do you honestly think anybody who came from nothing never bent any rules? Capitalism literally is built this way. It's a fluid system. As long as you deliver work you have done your job.

Of course once you get your job, you should do it well, and do what you are hired for, always cover for your co workers, but don't pretend a business or a boss is anything but that.

When you are paid by the hour, do what you are being paid for in those hours and do your work well, but there is no obligation outside of that.

If you give these people a finger they'll take an arm. If you work hard and build expectations, you will be expected to do this always.

Maybe your friend should say they have ADHD instead. My psychiatrist took a few years to finally diagnose me with it instead of bipolar disorder.

Symptoms can be somewhat similar, I think ADHD is less stigmatized and could serve as a cover for crisis situations.

I wouldn't off myself due to politics, that is nuts. It's understandable doing it to avoid homeless as that leads to a bunch of dangerous situations, and suffering. Can't you just downgrade and put your stuff into storage while doing uber or lyft. while sleeping in the car? Or better yet get an RV. There's always trucking jobs available as well.

I live with family, so housing isn't a problem right now. I do volunteer and help the homeless, so that's why I care about the city of Fremont voting to embrace fascism and criminalize homelessness and homeless aid.

What line of work is your friend in where they are required to disclose this? I thought disclosure was only mandatory in "safety sensitive" fields?

You need A LOT of money to successfully start a business and also have connections. And then you have to be working non stop for the rest of your life. Its a worse path that has a 90 plus percent chance of failure

There must be some courses you could study yourself to brush up your skills online or even books.

This world and system that we're in is so cruel. We shouldn't have to work to get housing, food or water. It's so tiring.

They said they're running out of money. Even if they didn't live at home, having no income or savings introduces you to a variety of fresh new hells. Even in the safety of being at home you sooner or later either feel you are or are actually told that you are a burden and to get out. You could also be missing the point that politics has real effects on real people. Devastating effects in some cases, which some Americans are slowly realizing.

I don't know if it will help you at all, but I just live day by day now. Perhaps you could try, policies, laws and the economy does fluctuate.

It's good that your taking those classes, you could even put that on your CV now, that you're in the process of completing it. You're getting more knowledge as you complete the units. Sending you some luck 🤞🍀

Home servers arent expensive, Ii got my first one dumpster diving.

Also look into SBCs (raspberry pi type stuff)

You could probably get a somewhat decent system for less than 50 dollars/euros if you contact companies/look on second hand platforms.

Facebook marketplace has a lot of stuff.

I have a Lenovo SFF hooked up to my modem that cost me 35 euros and it downloads every tv show/movie I want automatically and streams it to my tv. The most expensive parts were a external hard drive enclosure and the hard drives.

I have a computer and monitor that I literally found on the street.

You can find things for free/cheap and refurbish them and sell them.

It takes effort to find things but old computers are dirt cheap. Just don't expect to play games on it.

A 20 year old computer can run a headless Linux distro perfectly fine. It takes effort setting these things up and finding them, but it also teaches you skills as you do this. Expect to fail and be frustrated and break your head, but in the end you will learn things and have cool stuff in your home for little to no money.

Edit: some examples:

Resources:

I don't know how up to date these resources are. I also can't help you find the perfect system. These are things that you do yourself so you learn.

The above links took me less than 5 mins to find, and on first glance I can see some systems for less than 50 dollars that could get you started. Add in 5-10 dollars for a USB stick to install Linux from, and you've started your journey.

This is definitely NOT true. In most fields, you don't ever have to disclose a disability or mental illness unless you need accommodations.

This sounds totally off and a violation of HIPPA laws. Professionals of many felids have a mental heath diagnosis. Not to deny your friends condition but in my experience the majority of people I've met that say they're bipolar don't actually experience a sustained manic phase. Psychiatrists just use the diagnosis code for insurance billing because they have to put something in the required field or it won't get covered. Declaring mental issues on a job interview is how not to get hired.

My friend could have been wrong, I'm not entirely sure because I don't live in the same state as him.
