I saw on my Facebook today that people in my city are thinking of launching a Death Cafe, a safe space to drink tea, eat cake and discuss death without taboo.

Part of me wants to go to be reassured about CTB. I'm sure that's the exact opposite of what the organisers want, but I can't help but want to talk about my own eventual death. Maybe out of some need to vent about it.

It's not going to be counselling; I'm pretty sure it's just discussions around dying and stuff... actually I'm not sure at all. It just caught my eye earlier.

What are your thoughts on things like this?

Hm, as long as their is no actual death taking place there, I think it'd be a good idea. Just no minors allowed!!

But the idea behind it seems nice. Place for like-minded individuals to get together. hm, like here.

It's an interesting idea! If I am out with a friend we tend to have one of our random circular conversations that covers everything from awful family members to serial killing regardless of where we are so I wouldn't need a special cafe to talk in - unless they are providing priests or people to talk to?

To me it seems risky - the place might attract all sorts of 'pro-life' people who will try to talk you out of your decision. It's your decision to die, not theirs.

Edit: going there might also reveal your desire to die which you might be trying to hide like me.

Damn I was expecting Nembutal cocktails and such... not the best for repeat business but oh well, I guess the current idea is okay too.

Don't be surprised if a bunch of wealthy happy go lucky Karen's and Debbies cause it to get shut down and spout out some bullshit such as it glamorizes suicide on the media afterwards.

I just can't see an haven like that becoming a thing in a country or should I say society that only caters to opinions and lifestyles that give them money.

There's a cafe like this in my city as well. I haven't gone, but something tells me it is likely a venue for the "woke" crowd to discuss their fashionable woe. Cruel? I mean that actual discussions of suicidal intent would be met with horror and "you really need to talk with your therapist about this." Death and safe spaces shouldn't mix.

The US APA has officially denounced, firmly, other nations' advocacy of personal autonomy in (non-terminal) end of life decision-making. US courts regularly empower health, civic, and law enforcement authorities to remove citizens' civil rights. To protect citizens from ourselves. I'd be very wary of any in-person group that encourages open, personal discussion of suicide. Best of luck to you, whatever you decide.

Oddly enough, suicide could be a banned topic in that group. There's a lot to discuss about death without having to mention controversial topics like abortion, suicide, or euthanasia. Might end up being a bunch of people talking about alternate universes and religious descriptions of afterlife, or philosophical and scientific talk about what it means to be dead and how that will change when we are all cyborgs.
