Definitely a painful way to go but at least we know its lethal. But its not the best way to leave, there are better methods out there.

Sounds like he had a serious achohol problem and the hand sanitizer only contributed to his death. So I'm unsure as to whether drinking hand sanitizer alone would be a good way to go

It's a bad technique. If you survive you will probably be blind which makes subsequent attempts harder.

I wouldn't try it. If I was going to use alcohol, I'd just down whiskey by the liter.

There are likely other underlying factors at play here. I would be surprised if this man didn't have any other health problems, ex. liver failure brought on my alcoholism.

For everyone else reading this, this is absolutely not a good method so don't even think about it!
